Anybody has experience with using Blender 2.8 with an RX 5700 XT as a eGPU?

Have a 2015 iMac (macOS 10.15.2) with purge-wrangler for the TB2 and a Razer Core X Chroma with RX5700XT.

Do you recommend Radeon ProRender?

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

Yeah, download the latest Blender Mac and the Radeon Pro Render plug-in, and Material Library. There’s improvements in stability and de-noising.

You for sure want to make use of the RX 5700 XT… it’s worth $9,000 US dollars in today’s market. 😅

Also explore Eevee, Blender’s built-in realtime GPU renderer. It’s fast. The Race Spaceship demo scene is nicely done.

(Blender Cycles, for now, renders slowly in Mac OS - as it uses the CPU only)

It might be a year (??) wait before the Blender foundation finishes the next-gen Cycles X renderer and subsequently develops a Metal back end to allow Cycles X GPU rendering on Macs.

“The way forward will be a Metal backend on macOS. There’s nothing specific we can announce regarding that, but probably it is just a matter of time.” Brecht Van Lommel

If you update your Mac to Big Sur, you can also try out Otoy’s Octane X GPU renderer.

You’ll need to import models created in Blender, and apply materials and lighting within Octane X.
