I have a Late 2013 21.5" iMac.

2 years ago I replaced the the 5200 RPM 1 TB HDD with a 1 a 1TB SSD.

My iMac has an i5 4 core 3.2 Ghz Intel processor and 16 GB of RAM with Iris Pro Graphics.

I am looking for eGPU options that might work with my Tunderbolt 1 iMac and Mac OS 10.15.5 as that's what version is in public beta now.

One thing I have noticed about Iris Pro is games like Trainz 2019 have a huge frame rate issue where the graphics look like stop frame motion.  Even simple games like Worms W.M.D. see some graphics issues.

I'm hoping to extend the life of my iMac by a few years by adding a GPU.

I'm not looking to get top of the line graphics, but get noticeable improvements over Iris Pro on a budget. I am hoping to get Trainz 2019 running without choppy graphics and stitching glitches on water and trees.

Thanks

Would the Sonnet Breakaway Radeon 560-S work?

https://www.amazon.com/Sonnet-Breakaway-Radeon-560-S-Thunderbolt/dp/B07W7CG99Y/ref=sr_1_1?camp=1789&creative=9325&dchild=1&keywords=Sonnet+Breakaway+Puck&linkCode=ur2&qid=1587213654&sr=8-1

I haven't been able to find an conclusive answer yet.  Sonnet says on Amazon when answering someone else's question that the 570 model would but does not say if the 560 does or does not.  All customer answers are "No, this is for thunderbolt 3 macs only".

The 570 model appears to be discontinued.  It does not exist on Amazon that I see.  The Sonnet store says it's out of stock.  Another online store says this item is no longer available.

I did find a post on here that someone had this working with a 2012 Mac Mini, but then it stopped working 10.13.4.  I wasn't able to find if they ever got it working again after PurgeWrangler was updated.

This puck looks like the best budget option for me if I could get it to work with 10.15.4

Edit:

Just got a reply from Sonnet,

They are saying that the 560 will not work.  I would need a RX 570, RX 580, Vega 56 or Vega 64 to get something working with purge-wrangler.  However, they made it clear they do not support purge-wrangler, nor does Apple or AMD.

Would this RX 580 Card along with a Sonnet Box be my path forward?
