Hi,

In the past 2 or 3 months, I checked a couple of articles, posts and Youtube videos that promote the eGPU solution to overcome dGPU bottlenecks in iMacs. So, I bought Sonnet Box 550 and Radeon RX 5700 XT to try the eGPU solution by myself. The result was unexpected!! The performance was lower than the Vega 48.

Here are the results of both GPUs. Both results for the internal display of the iMac.

Unigine Valley (ExtremeHD)

Vega 48: 2355

RX 5700 XT: 2319

Also, I did 1 more test by using 2018 MacBook Pro + external monitor

Unigine Valley (ExtreemHD)

RX 5700 XT: 2590

Are those normal results?

Unigine Valley uses OpenGL, and OpenGL on macOS is quite meh. OpenGL on a eGPU is even more horrible.

The eGPU has already less bandwidth than the integrated one, looping it back to the internal monitor doesn't help.

macOS RX 5700 drivers need some performance tuning, 10.15.3 seems a bit better.

You should try to benchmark a Metal game. Shadow of the Tomb Raider for example.

I already did a test with an external monitor. The results are not quite impressive at all. Also, I tried World of Warcraft, which uses Metal API, and the FPS is lower than the dGPU that comes with the iMac

I’m not surprised. The Vega is a decent card with very well optimised drivers in the best possible physical hardware set up (pcie). The 5700xt has worse drivers and is being limited due to tb3.

MacBook wise, you are only using a single performance reference metric, you’ll need to test further.

2017 13" MacBook Pro Touch Bar
GTX1060 + AKiTiO Thunder3 + Win10
GTX1070 + Sonnet Breakaway Box + Win10
GTX1070 + Razer Core V1 + Win10
Vega 56 + Razer Core V1 + macOS + Win10
Vega 56 + Mantiz Venus + macOS + W10
