Should I update to Big Sur?
new to the egpu world, and still navigating through it all. I've browsed through the site a good bit, but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer to- should I update to the new Big Sur OS or should I wait? Just cause there is so much uncertainty with new OS are (support and/or stability). And also how apple silicon is not supporting egpus (at least at the moment).
Apologies if this has been asked already, but I've tried to find the answer but was unsuccessful..
Wait. If you can use eGPU under your current macOS, I would suggest you to stay in current one. Upgrading to new macOS will bring you a lot of troubles.
@bigmouthshark, thank you!
and out of curiosity, are you also in the same boat as me? seeing if others have and if they experienced issues?
Thank you again
@newtotheegpuworld, I upgraded from Mojave to Big Sur. And now eGPU is not working, I'm still trying to figure out how to solve it. So I'm a little bit regretful about upgrading ...
You can refer to my issues here.
Hey, I made a video about the 5500XT, Core X and Mac mini 2018 couple of months ago. In the beginning it kinda worked, but after plugging in another hdmi monitor I needed to start the core x 10-15 sec. after the Mac. With the macOS 11.0.1 everything works perfect. The Mac boots up super fast without any issues. My connection: Mac mini -> core x -> 1x DP port LG monitor 1x HDMI Samsung monitor. Till now, I'm super happy. I'm filming right now a video for YouTube showing my setup and boot up of my Mac with the egpu.
@newtotheegpuworld, same for me. Booting is much faster. Also, bootcamp works great for me. You can see here in my video the boot up process with big sur (but it is in German):
I just upgraded to Big Sur 11.0.1 on MacBook 2020 13''.
Everything, looks great so far. Both in Bootcamp and Mac OS.
I can now even boot into MacOS with eGPU plugged in. Previously I had to unplug it and then plug it in after login.
Windows version: 1903 (builld 18362.30). Bootcamp is on the same internal SSD as MacOS
@matmatija, thanks. Did you also update the apple software in windows?
do you see any performance difference. Did you run any benchmarks on either side?
What card are you using?
I have the same setup with 5700xt. I run windows 10 2004 edition with the pci.sys swap. Had 1903 till April may this year on ext ssd and then decided to make an internal installation and it worked. Have you tried any other option apart from 1903?
My friend @arouris runs Big Sur with latest windows with no problem!
