State of eGPU for Macs – Catalina 10.15 Update
I can confirm with the setup I mentioned above, most issues were fixed for me black screen of death, as well as computer not waking up, and yes egpu connected directly to my TV through HDMI,
I know am just started running an active DP 1.4 to HDMI 2.0 adapter to try and get better video, and found some other issues but those are for a different thread
I have a mid 2011 iMac. I have recently upgraded to SSD and added 16GB of Ram. I am unable to install Catalina. If I get a compatible eGPU, will I be able to install Catalina? Will the process be complex?
@Wangya, Not worth it to install Catalina through workarounds imo.
Has anyone tried the new MacOS 10.15.5 beta? Has there been any improvements that can be gleamed so far?
Hi. Im using MacBook Air 2015 (MacOS Catalina) with processcer 1.6 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 + 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. Can you advice what products (eGPU) can upgrade my macbook air performance to run Final Cut Pro X
Got an 27" iMac2013 running 10.13.6, with native NVIDA 780 4G graphics. Enabled CUDA & Nvdia drivers - as need them for REDSHIFT & C4D. It's working fine, and all software/app's utilitize the extra features.
But running out of GPU for on the fly renders for redshift.
Looking at getting EGPU setup - a RAZER X Chroma enclosure & putting a 1080TI - do you see any issues on this working, as we are already running NVIDIA Cards internally? Any help would be appreciated.
Hello everyone, I have a MacBook Pro mid 2012 with the razer core x enclosure housing an nvidea gtx 1050ti. I was running Sierra and managed to use the purge wrangler or automate-egpu script and it was all running fine, I have now just updated my Mac to catalina 10.15.7 and I can’t get the MacBook to recognise that there is a graphics card inside the razer core, Can anyone help me out or know if it even possible now?
thanks in advanced
I have an AkiTio Thunder2 PCIe Box but a T3 15"MacBook Pro 2017. My question is; can I connect an eGPU to the Thunder2 (which works over thunderbolt 2), buy a thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 adapter from Apple, and connect it to my 2017 15" Macbook Pro? Would OS Catalina see it as an eGPU? or would I need extra setup steps? Thanks in advance!
@ruanth_chrisley_thyssen, Yes it should work. Apple only restricts eGPU feature on Thunderbolt 1 and Thunderbolt 2 Macs. Thunderbolt 3 and newer Macs should work with all versions of Thunderbolt enclosures. There's one exception of TB3 enclosures using TI82 USB-C controller but it's not applicable to your setup. The AKiTiO Thunder2's power adapter may not have enough power to the eGPU. You'd likely need a different PSU to power both the Thunder2 and eGPU.
Hi @itsage thank you so much for the quick reply.
Sounds great, I've been going through the forum and trying to find a GPU that fits inside the chassis and possibly would run off its PSU. If I read correctly both the AKiTio thunder2 and thunder3 supply 75W of power which is not great. I'm thinking of sticking to AMD for ease of use (hot plugging) and perhaps going with a less demanding (power wise) single-slot work card like the WX5100
