Stuck at black screen on startup

I have been running an NVIDIA Quadro K1200 egpu in a Sonnet Echo Express Pro with my Late 2011 Macbook Pro utilizing the Purge-Wrangler script for a number of years. After recent OS and driver updates, I have run into a problem. I don't know which update created the problem. If I boot up the machine with the Thunderbolt cable plugged in, I never get to the login screen. The internal screen and the external monitors stay black. However, if I unplug the Thunderbolt cable, then boot up the machine, wait until I see the login screen, and then plug in the Thunderbolt cable it recognizes the egpu no problem and all the monitors have output.

Obviously, the workaround is just to unplug the cable prior to boot, but that is a bit annoying and I would like to try to fix the problem permanently if possible. Anyone have any ideas as to what might be creating the problem and can recommend a fix?

Thanks in advance.

Just in my personal experience: Switch to Radeon for less headaches.

@ikir, Trying to extend my current hardware a bit longer until the next generation ARM powered Mac’s hit the market.

@ikir, @dunlopc35, I have same issue even with Radeon RX580.

Mac Mini Late 2012, Sapphire Radeon RX580, Razer Chrome X, all Apple TBT cables.
