The same issues keep coming up so I decided to record some videos to help show everyone how to solve some of the most common issues. Hope this helps. Let me know if there are other issues that people could use clarification on and I’ll see what I can do to help answer those as well.

What model headless adapter do you recco - I don't have that part yet.

I still am not sure my setup is working right, but I've been playing in windows bootcamp all night.  The last time I tried to run in Mac OS 10.13.2, things weren't working right despite seeing the 1070 powering both internal and external display.  I however, plugged in after boot selection screen.  I'll try the full shut off method you described.

Are you running 10.13.2?

The headless adapter that I got is this one.

I am running 10.13.2. I have ran graphics benchmarks in all of these configurations, used iStat Menus to verify that the eGPU is being used, and tested multiple games and comparing performance and frame rates.

Thank you very much for your Tutorials. I´m also on the newest Model of the Macbook Pro but i don´t have an external Monitor at all. You pluged the Headless Adapter to your external Monitor right? Is there a way to get the eGPU running only with your Macbook? I couldn´t find a Headless Adapter with USB-C...

No, the headless adapter goes into the graphics card, no external monitor needed. I used Display Port since my card has 3 DP and 1 HDMI, I figured I’d leave the HDMI open in case I ever wanted to use it since I’ll never use all 3 DP at the same time. You can also use a DVI one, but I’ve never tested one to know if they work for sure or not.

Thank you, ricosuave0922. The videos are very useful. I now manage to run both laptop screen and monitor off the eGPU. Or at least that is what they report. In practice

  • it seems that it is still the internal graphics that runs the show and not the GTX970 eGPU
  • OpenCL still doesn't detect the GTX970 as an OpenCL device (as reported by clinfo).

Any ideas as to how to get the GTX970 to really take over? I am mostly interested in OpenCL, not graphics or external monitors, but I won't be able to use it until I see the GTX 970 as an OpenCL device. Incidentally I assume this is the same problem that others are experiencing with the eGPU not taking over and hence not helping with the frame rate.

both 1
both 2
both 3

So let me ask it differently: has anyone managed to run OpenCL on an eGPU?

I mean from a Mac over Thunderbolt.

And, if so, what does clinfo say?

What should the resolution of the headless adapter be?  I notice that yours has 4K resolution (3840 x 2016), yet the screen of your 15-inch MBP is 2880 x 1800. Is there any relation between the two? Should there be?

Or should the resolution of the adapter merely be one supported by the eGPU...

I would appreciate if you could enlighten me on this.

You can only use a resolution supported by your monitor. So the max you can use on the MacBook monitor is 2880x1800. On display settings on your Mac, use scaled instead of best for display and find the resolution you like. Then use that resolution on the headless adapter as well. You want to set the two to use the same resolution.

OK, that would then be 1440 x 900...

Thanks
