I own a MacBookPro 2017 and an LG 5K TB monitor.  With COVID I’m working from home and not travelling, so the MBP sits in clamshell mode all the time.  I’m tired of hearing the fans running all the time, so I’m wondering which is the best route to take performance and sound wise (with money being a secondary consideration).

A. Upgrade to a 16” 2019 MB with a Radeon Pro 5600M gpu.

B. Locate a Blackmagic eGPU Pro AMD Radeon Vega 56 and use it with my existing setup

Which route would you take?

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

@bcarney, Radeon Pro 5600M dGPU performance is similar to the Radeon Pro Vega 56 in Blackmagic eGPU Pro. Operating noise is hard to determine. What's the typical use when the cooling fans kick on with your current 2017 15-in MacBook Pro? Have you considered opening it up to clean the cooling system and apply new thermal paste for CPU and GPU? The high power CPU + GPU in the 16-in MacBook Pro may be noisy too in clamshell mode.

@itsage, I wound up just picking up a Blackmagic eGPU Pro.  Now my MacBook Pro runs silently without much fan noise.

@bcarney, Glad to hear you achieved silent operation with an eGPU.
