Weird sleep behaviour with Mantiz Venus

Background:
Bought a Mantiz Venus since Sept 2017, paired it with a Powercolor Vega 56 (flashed to 64 bios) with first an MBP 15" 2016, and subsequently an MBP 15" 2018, exclusively in clamshell mode + external monitors. Both machines had these issues:

  • Mac crashes on wake occasionally
  • Mac wakes from sleep throughout

Decided I had enough of this not working, and took a gamble thinking it's the Mantiz Venus. So went an ordered a Razer Core X, and wow everything works as it should, including sleep, etc.

My preference is if I could use the Mantiz Venus, it would be best as it is a one-cable solution. Can someone identify if it's a hardware issue or software related?

I swapped out the Mantiz Venus for the Razer Core X at 1320hrs. So the logs before 13:24:59 illustrates the behaviour of the Mantiz Venus (without any USB devices attached to it). As you can see, the mac goes to sleep for 12 second intervals? And it gets VERY warm. After switching to the Razer Core X, everything works as it should. Keyboard + mouse are bluetooth based. Edit: mantiz Venus works fine with a ThinkPad X1 Yoga g3 and X1 tablet g3 in Windows.

Okay think I found out what's causing the wake issue, it's the USB daughter board in the Mantiz Venus.

Upon removing the USB daughter board, everything works fine in the Mantiz Venus including sleep.

Daughter board removed

USB daughter board

Does anybody else have the same issues, and after removing the USB daughter board the Mantiz Venus works well? Meanwhile i'll be using the Razer Core X, as without the USB the Mantiz Venus is no different. Will contact Mantiz directly for a replacement board.

I have the same problem. But I didn't know it was due to the USB daughter board. Please update with your results - I'd love to fix this issue as well.

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

@kelvin_tan did you install the ethernet driver recommended by [email protected]? maybe it could be that the driver is keeping the mac on, I did have this issue with my Mantiz Venus, however mine died and I decided to get the Razer Core X.

During these tests the ethernet driver wasn't installed. I had the ethernet driver installed earlier when I was using the mbp2016, but still faced sleep issues. When the 2018 came I did not install the driver.

@juan_c_yunis sent them an email the same day I posted this thread. No replies from them even if I don't mind paying for a replacement board.

I’m pleased to say Mantiz got back to me with the following remedy:

Sorry about that, we did miss to read the mail. 
Actually it is simple to fix the Apple laptop FW issue. 
Shift IR53 resistor to IR4 on the IO board then the sleep issue will be gone. 
Do you need us to do it? Let us know.

Will be trying it out to see if it resolves the issue, looking forward to using the Mantiz Venus again!

Did moving the resistor work for you? It’s extremely small I’m afraid of ruining it

Okay bit the bullet last Friday and put the board through the office SMD rework station. It's small but some patience and a USB microscope helps.

The good news is... it works! My Macbook Pro 15" 2018 sleeps properly now, with a Vega 56 inside the enclosure. No more of the 11~13secs wake up issues.

I'm back to using the Mantiz Venus as a daily driver, since it is a working one-cable solution compared to the Razer Core X.

If you don't have access to a SMD rework station, suggest you contact Mantiz and see if you can ship the board to them for a rework. They offered to rework mine for me but I declined given it's going to take awhile for the board to return.
