So all Venus has this issue due to SMD position?

@ikir I have no idea, but bought mine in September 2017. Not too sure if newer production runs have corrected this.

@kelvin_tan Thank you for sharing your success. That's excellent work! Can you show where about on the mainboard this resistor is? I will check with other enclosures that use the same TUL board. It looks like a challenge using a solder gun.

@itsage Here you go, original from Mantiz.

mantiz smd shift

A solder gun would be tricky, best is to have a hot-air SMD rework station, blow, use tweezers and apply pressure to the SMD until it budges, then put it on the IR4. Use some flux.

Thank you! That does look tricky given to proximity of other solder pads. Also my hands and eyes aren't good. Best to use rework station like you said. 😀

Thank you for investigating and sharing the results in this thread.  I also experience this sleep behavior, until I saw this thread I always assumed it was a trait common to all eGPUs in MacOS - I didn't once think it was specific to Mantiz.

To resolve the issue for me, this SMD also needs to be moved.  Mantiz said they can do this but I'd need to stump up $20 for them to return the unit, that means I'll also need to pay to send the board and then deal with any possible customs issues.  Not sure if I am confident to have a bash at trying to fix it myself with a heat gun.

Does anyone know if these boards readily available to buy individually?  Or are they built specific for Mantiz?

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

FWIW I do not have this issue with the V2 Venus I bough this year... sleeps all day and night without a peep.

Something else to try (potentially before you attack the motherboard)

With the TB cable plugged into the left, I had all the issues above, moving the TB cable to the right solved 95% of them, the resistor move fixed the final 5% (but these were infrequent issues), but to be honest just using the connections on the right was good enough.

Hopefully this may help someone and save them a soldering job
