It's getting time to upgrade my 4yr old 2016 MBP 15" and I'm looking at the 16" options. Work is paying, so typically I'd just get the higher $$ one, but what is people's experience running BootCamp on these and using eGPUs?

With the eGPU the higher powered graphics is not really of use to me (I have a Radeon 5700XT in Razer Core X Chroma) and though the 1TB would be nice, it's not necessary. Realistically I'm probably more interested in it as a workhorse and photo tool most of the time - battery life, power to run a lot of open windows (Teams, Zoom, Word, Powerpoint, Many Excel sheets) etc. Frankly my 2016 MacBook Pro is actually pretty good n this regard, except battery life.

Thoughts?

Option 1:

2.6GHz 6-core processor
512GB storage
AMD Radeon Pro 5300M

  • 2.6GHz 6-core ninth-generation Intel Core i7 processor
  • Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5300M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory
  • 16GB of 2666MHz DDR4 memory
  • 512GB of SSD storage¹
  • 16-inch Retina display with True Tone
  • Magic Keyboard
  • Touch Bar and Touch ID
  • Four Thunderbolt 3 ports

Option 2:

2.3GHz 8-core processor
1TB storage
AMD Radeon Pro 5500M

  • 2.3GHz 8-core ninth-generation Intel Core i9 processor
  • Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory
  • 16GB of 2666MHz DDR4 memory
  • 1TB of SSD storage¹
  • 16-inch Retina display with True Tone
  • Magic Keyboard
  • Touch Bar and Touch ID
  • Four Thunderbolt 3 ports

@ritero, Do a BTO and get the best CPU, most amount of RAM and storage. The base RP 5300M dGPU will be just fine if you're using the RX 5700 XT eGPU.

@itsage,

I have the Option 1 laptop as well. Itsage - what are some of the limitations with option 1 config?

For example if you wanted to run dual or tripple 6900xt or 6800xt gpus coming up?

I assume you are going to hit diminishing returns eventually?

Also Is it still true that its best to run the monitors off of at least 1 egpu? and run Clamshelled?

I have 2 monitors that i don't generally use at the same time. One side of the room and the other..One for my music setup and a cintiq 27 for my art setup.

SO other than my huge USB chain.. - I have one or the other monitor OFF depending on what i'm doing.

I am planning for at the moment using Dual eGPUs mainly for Rendering in MacOS with  Redshift and Octane.

I am NOT a gamer and won't be running Bootcamp for any reason.

Based on what we know so far.. and definitely know later today.. I am wondering if the 6900xt is wasted. considering the eGPU penalty even Given that compute tasks don't have the same bandwidth issues that gaming does. Though i might still get the high end because they could be used in a Macpro eventually..

@ataylor, The Thunderbolt 3 ports are the same so your limits are soldered RAM and storage. Since you're planning on using two eGPUs, make sure to connect them on separate side to use separate TB3 controller. Running the primary monitor off the eGPU is the best way to do it. Multiple and external GPU usage would depend on the application. I don't have experience with Redshift and Octane but eGPU is typically good for compute tasks.

@itsage, I was under the impression bus 1 were the top 2 and bus 2 was the bottom 2...is there a map of the 16 inch model?

Also has anyone ever tried 4?

Is it stiil recommended that one use any of the utils like purge-wrangler / set-egpu... when on a real mac with supported AMD card... vs just checking the box on each app in general in get info?

I started out in hackintosh land with eGPUs I never have seen just a very simple DO this NOT that document when using bog standard mac with supported GPUs.

Also is a dummy display dongle still needed in some cases?

@ataylor

The Octane X beta currently out there is already pretty fast running on an external 5700XT.

It’s exciting to see the gain in speed compared to CPU rendering.

The holdup is it will be a month or three before the shipping versions of Octane X, Big Sur 11.1, and RDNA 2 drivers for Mac are released.

But, I wouldn’t expect any slowdown over TB3 using dual 6900XT eGPUs.

@mini-i5, if you have a current 16 inch mbpro you can use octane now... albet slowly with the 5300/5500 gpus.. or the 5000 series of course... But can't wait to grab a few 6900xt's for egpus.
