I didn't do anything special. I had the nVidia drivers from my previous install, so when I upgraded to High Sierra it automatically prompted me to update them. It gave me an error because I have SIP disabled, but I just clicked continue and they installed fine. Then I switched on the nVidia driver (in the menu item so OS X wasn't selected for video driver), un-installed the automate-egpu.sh script I had installed from 10.12, and then installed the new package and it worked perfectly. I still have SIP disabled FYI

Upgraded to High Sierra on my MBP 13" Early 2015, using this approach works just fine!

Also seems to allow me to close the MBP lid without putting macOS to sleep. Pretty sure it wasn't possible in Sierra.

However, the need to plugin TB line at the right timing still exists. Guess it's a hardware thing.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) with Akitio Node TB3 with Apple USB-C/TB3 to TB2 adapter and Gigabyte Aorus Xtreme GeForce 1080 Ti Waterforce working great. Going to test a multi-eGPU setup soon(ish).

Good stuff! I have 2 x eGPUs (modified Akitio Thunder2) working on the nMP, so you should have no trouble with multi-eGPU. I just wish we could do more than 2!

Need to see pics of that double GPU Mac Pro...

I second that

I posted in this a while back and these are my custom builds.

Hi!

Just wanted to confirm that this is working on my MacBook Pro 13" mid 2016 with touch bar, macOS High Sierra 10.13 (17A405), AKiTio Thunder3, NVidia GTX 1050ti 4GB, and Samsung 4K via Display Port.

Thank a lot!

Just gave it another go, hoping other peoples solutions for secondary screens not coming on properly would work and no luck... even worse than last time actually. Had it working once, internal only, mirroring didn't do the tricked. tried logging out and back in, ended up with black screens on both... le sigh. No idea why its such ha pain for me. 2017 i3 inch, Samsung 4K TV, Display port, Breakaway box and 1070...

For you it should be easy to get it to work. 13" MBP only use the iGPU while 15" have the dGPU too making it more complicated. Anyway, we need to wait for a fix.

That’s weird. In all macOS High Sierra versions I have been able to apply the patch for enabling thunderbolt (to make AKiTio Thunder3 to wok), and then use my Radeon RX 480 “with an external power supply of course”. But now after all this time, I decided to try again with the NVidia 1050ti, using this patch, and after following the steps on the first post, it worked perfectly. So now I have the card in the enclosure (doesn’t need external power supply), so it looks nicer.

Yeah tell me about it... my set up has been easier for the things that are meant to be awkward and harder for the things that are meant to be easy, its a bloody pain.

Have a fake screen adapter in the post, lets see if that gets things working on my internal/LG 5K.

MBP 2016 15”+ game box 1070, a Samsung  external display using dp

The setup doesn’t work. macOS can identify the card successfully but the external display is black

I haven't had a chance to totally verify this but try the following:

Stay up without egpu connected.

Log in and connect egpu.

Logout and lol back in to get the 1070 recognized.

Should now have black screen on external monitor and recognized 1070. Now disconnect your display port or hdmi cable and reconnect it. External screen should be mirrored now.

Ha, great to see some pics and was going to mention the tea, recognised it instantly, everyone was drinking that stuff non stop all over South America when I was there, took me a few months to get the taste, not a patch on the English cuppa though... ;-D

I had problems at first too, here is my workflow and observations:

- Fresh High Sierra install
- Make sure SIP is ENABLED
- Install nVidia drivers (this is important, if you get an error during nvidia driver installation, it won't work and SIP is most likely still DISABLED, you need to make sure SIP is ENABLED. The nvidia driver install should run without any errors. Try to boot to recovery and enable SIP then try installing nvidia driver again without any errors)
- Once nvidia driver is installed, boot to recovery, disable SIP
- Boot to OSX, Login, plug-in eGPU, logout...at this point your external monitor should be working.

This exact workflow worked for:
- MacBook Pro 2017 15" with Radeon 560 dGPU
- Acer Predator x34 Ultrawide monitor (3440x1440)
- DisplayPort cable
- nvidia 1080TI Founder's

I see as well iGPU in basic about this mac, but in system report I can see 1070 correctly, as well my external monitoring is plug directly to 1070 and it is working properly, as well cuda-z

I also have a Vega 64 at home, but stopped using it because anything that uses OpenCL/GL cause the system to freeze and reboot. Will test that again tonight, if its fixed after this new update will ditch my 1080ti and switch to Vega 64

I f** love you man, I did what you suggested and it worked, I didn't have to do a fresh install. I uninstalled the NVIDIA driver, removed the EGPU kext, did a rebuild caches, boot to recovery and enabled SIP, booted into macOS and installed NVidia driver without errors, booted to recovery and disabled SIP, booted into macOS and installed the eGPU kext, restarted, logged in, connected the mantiz venus with the external display, checked the connection in system report (NVIDIA chip), logged out and my external display worked immediately.

Yeah, in my screenshots you can see that; I have all working but I am in macOS 10.13 (17A405), which is just the "High Sierra 10.13 Supplemental Update". I did read somewhere there NVidia driver complains on 10.13.1, so better wait.

Shots I took earlier this week 🙂

Another thing I have noticed with my Macbook, DO NOT use the left ports, use the ports on the right, for some reason, I had weird problems with the left ports

That's the first I've heard of that with any of the 15" 4-port Thunderbolt 3 Macs. In theory they should all operate with the same capability / bandwidth. Will check around, see if Apple has any documentation on that. They've been pretty good about making support docs for usage recommendations for all things TB3.

For example this line is in reference to the 2016 15" model. Pretty sure same is true for 2017 model. At a minimum I haven't seen anything to suggest otherwise.

  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016) delivers full Thunderbolt 3 performance on all four ports.

Thunderbolt 3 Macs, Sonnet and OWC eGPUs, 4K Displays, etc

Are you sure you're not thinking of the 13" model? That model has a TB3 port on the left which has more bandwidth / available performance than the one on the right.

But everything on Apple's site suggests the most recent 15" MBP models use 4 identical TB3 ports. All four list as: 40Gbps, support for a 4K 60Hz display, power delivery, etc.

It's true. I discovered that the first time i put together my eGPU setup in windows/bootcamp. I could use the EGPU in the top left port but if i connect another device in bottom left port, my system used to crash all the time, as soon i tried the top right no more issues at all, i could use all 4 ports.

PD: I do have the 2017 15" MBP Radeon 560.

Any firmware update for MBP 2016 with improvements for Windows with 10.13.1 (as it was with Supplemental Update for MBP 2017)?

That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die.

Surprising.

Possibly those two ports share PCIe lanes whereas the two on the right don't. Because spec-wise all four ports are the same according to Apple. At one time I had a Thunderbolt 3 Dock and eGPU both connected on the left side (RX 580, Sonnet 550), seemed to work OK. No crashes or odd behaviors anyway.

I had connected the Mantiz Venus with a GTX 1080 Ti (with xbox wireless dongle connected to the mantiz) and a USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 RAID 0 Enclosure (2x1TB).

Dont know about Mac, but in Windows Device Manager, the left ports show as 8x PCIe, while the right ports show 4x PCIe.
