Hey!

New to the forum, so I thought I'd poke my head in here. I'm an Software Engineer living in Tokyo, originally from Ireland, and I've started to seriously flirt with getting into the idea of eGPU, in particular, since the release of the Aorus Gaming Box (due to it's compact size).

I recently sold my high-end desktop (x99, GTX 1080) and want to move to something more portable, and I'm hoping eGPU can do that for me. I currently have a 2015 Macbook Pro via work, so I might start off using this, but I'll wait and see what happens later in the year with Intel's 8th Generation mobile processors. 8700HQ sounds like a potential beast if/when it gets released.

My primary reason for going eGPU, is that I plan on leaving Tokyo in a year or so, and wherever I go next will likely be a temporary stay too, so it makes sense to have something I can throw in a backpack and take with me anywhere.

If anyone is planning on Tokyo or Japan at some point, and needs travel tips, or advice on how to not get nuked, feel free to hit me up!

Go easy on me 😉

Teddy

Welcome to the board, Teddy.  Greetings from currently soggier than usual Houston, TX!  What are you trying to accelerate with your eGPU?

Primarily games, but maybe some ML stuff when needed. I also do some video encoding from time to time, and find that NVENC suits me fine.

I think I'm looking at buying at an awkward time though, with 8th generation CPUs just around the corner, and new thunderbolt enclosures coming out every month. If you have any recommendations, I'd be happy to listen 😀

P.S Hope you and yours are doing okay in the flooding 😢

For portability, Aorus looks like the one - 1070 packs a solid punch.  The driver situation is a bit iffy at the moment, but I wouldn't let that stop me.

Funny I just emailed Apple's machine learning group last night to express my displeasure at the lack of progress in this area.  They've started a blog:  https://machinelearning.apple.com  but the eGPU kit isn't cutting it with a single RX 580.  This is what they're up against:

https://developer.nvidia.com/devbox

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/data-center/dgx-station/

If they are serious about Thunderbolt expansion (for laptops), they need to lift all the crap EFI limitations and allow us to attach a decent number of GPUs.

There's always something new right around the corner.  I'd say enjoy it now.  Which games are you playing?
