Hello everyone! I'm very happy to have found you!

I'm thinking to buy a used laptop and set it up with an eGPU, so I can ditch my old laptop and old desktop.
Tired of having 2 systems and space in the house at the moment is limited.

I've been reading a lot for a few days now but to be honest, the more I read the more confused I become with all this seemingly endless options and problems that arise.

PS: What conditions do I have to meet in order to be able to send private messages?

Hi Mate
You said in your quote "I've been reading a lot for a few days now but to be honest, the more I read the more confused I become with all this seemingly endless options and problems that arise.

My answer:- I've been on this platform for a long time and a lot of people like you have lots of questions and unless you have got a lot of time to research and are very clever in computers you won't get whatever to work it probably won't work with all programs anyway take it from me don't bother. Your time is very pressures and you can waste a lot of your time on something that may never work or might partially work and at best be unstable. Give up now before you waste time and money on hardware that you will have to sell at a loss.  Andy

@andy588tt that sort of attitude didn't get a man on the moon...

I am not very tech savvy but enjoy reading up on things to learn. I had a job once where we were told to "browse the internet" for two weeks. I was on a Senior Visual Designers day rate so who am I to complain? IN that time I learned just about enough to cobble together a Hackintosh, coming from never even looking inside a PC before. I had to youtube which side of a CPU to put thermal paste on, I kid you not (I imagine @oliverb will like that one).

I've had about 5 or 6 eGPUs now, maybe more actually? And my set ups are always a bit more awkward due to TB3 monitor, but I have got them working and pretty damn reliably...

So yeah, there is lot, some of its outdated, some not relevant.

My recommendation - ignore everything that doesn't relate to your EXACT laptop, make, year, model and OS, start from there...

We are all different I only expressed my view I use a computer as an extension of my work, a computer it's just a tool in a big toolbox in the studio where I work. We use Mac computers and tried to upgrade and make the mac computer better with an updated graphics card, we have four in the studio and wasted time and a lot of money we ended up purchasing an up to date PC that just fitted the need of just one application need, we still use the Macs but overcome the problem with the PC purchase. We don't use computers as a hobby but like they say if it's not broken don't fix it. Everybody is different and everybody are entitled to have a go at whatever I have only stated what happened to me as a senior tech in a busy broadcast studio. Have fun Andy

My set up is used for work and play, when I was contracting my time was literally money so I was very conscious not to waste either.

If your workflow is macOS based upgrading the GPU performance on a Mac is really quite simple (I only have troubles as I use AMD cards for FCP X/Davinci in macOS and W10 gaming) so no idea where you were going wrong.
