"Hej" and hello from Sweden. Just thought I'd introduce myself to you all!
Been browsing the site for ages and finally thought I'd take part. Especially since I'm waiting for my 2018/2020 Mac mini to arrive and looking towards getting an eGPU to team up with it. Up until now I've been using a MacBook Air 2011, so I'm looking forward to have my mind blown in the comparative performance improvement. And I just really want to play games again, work with more demanding software, do more creative things like Logic Pro and some light 4K video editing and photo work, and virtualise Windows for work related needs.
I was holding out for an updated Mac mini early 2020, but felt I couldn't wait any longer. So here I am. Ready with an upgrade kit with 32GB of memory, a Satechi aluminium dock/hub as a new base. I'm planning on shoving some felt strips between the dock and mini for extra air flow and just leave the base off when I put the mini back together (keeping the shield but removing the plastic foot/cover). When the warranty period ends I might re-paste it if I feel it's necessary. As a bonus I'll get some re-pasting experience in on the MacBook Air 2011 though. I'll see how long I can keep it going for.
I've narrowed the choices of enclosures down to either the Razer Core X or the Sonnet Breakaway Box 550. If I understand it both have power supplies that can be upgraded after the fact if necessary, and both have good support. But I don't quite foresee myself getting anything much more powerful than a Radeon 5700 XT so PSU upgradeability might be moot. But it's good that it can be replaced should the need arise for other reasons. For a GPU my eye is set on the PowerColor Red Dragon 5700 XT. Hopefully the MacOS 10.15.5 update sorts the performance and power issues I've seen mentioned on here with the RDNA generation of Navi cards.
Looking forward to my introduction into the eGPU family. Hope you're all well in these Corona times!
