Hi all,

The amount of info here is amazing and has helped me come to a conclusion on the path I want to take however there is little data on the performance loss at 4K aside from a few benchmarks. Does anyone have or have the ability to provide info on how AAA titles like Anthem, FFXIV or other similar will perform at high res on an external monitor? From what I gather the loss will not be as bad as at 1080P due to the GPU working harder and the CPU being able to keep up a little better due to the lower framerates caused by the higher resolution. I also plan to use the USB hub and have also found there to be reports of issues with this. I currently use an elgato hub with my Razer Black Widow X, Naga, Goliathus and 2 external drives (a 4TB WD MyBook and a 500GB Samsung T5 USB SSD).

The setup I plan to use:

Razer Blade 15 (2019) with RTX 2070 Max-Q
Mantiz Venus with RTX 2080

TL;DR -  What can I expect using egpu at 4K? Most benchamrks seem to be done at 1080p for some reason...

I just played Anthem with Blade 15 advanced 2018 with rtx2070 on Core v2 on 1440p it’s quite smooth on 50ish FPS it more, I’m waiting my step up but I think on 1440p your Blade 2070 is powerful enough to run Anthem as well, on beta it was a bit struggle but the release version so far is pretty smooth on my core setting this game seems not limited too much by TB3 bandwidth, but maybe for 4K you’ll need 2080 or 2080ti to max experience.

Razer Blade 15 2018, i7 8750H 16gb ddr4 2666mhz 1tb 970Evo
Razer Blade Stealth 12,5 2016 i7 7500U 8gb ddr3 1866mhz 500gb 970Evo
MacBook Pro 13 mid 2012 i5 3210M 12gb ddr3 1600mhz 500GB HDD
Razer Core V2 rtx 2070 Black 2040mhz Boost clock
Previous setting: rtx 2080ti Asus Turbo, rtx 2080 xc gaming, rtx 2080 Fe, Zotac Mini 1080ti, Evga 1080 FTW2 gaming.

Thanks for the feedback. I am running through my dock right now and getting 60fps at 1080p on near ultra with the 2070 Max-Q. I was consdiering the 2080 to see if I could eek out 80-100fps which is the perfect amount of smoothness for me at a higher res like 1440p. I may just order the items to try it out and go from there. Worst case scenario I just return them.

MacBook Pro 2018 15inch i9 + Razer Core X + BootCamp settings do not seem to have a decline in performance when 4K gaming.
3DMark's 4K Benchmark is similar, and performance in a real game looks almost the same.

Thanks. I picked up a Core v2 today and a 2080 but I am having an issue where it sticks to 30fps no matter the res. Trying to troubleshoot.

@kantide I believe that 30FPS limit has to do with GeForce Experience.

I should have been more clear. I was having an issue where it stuck to 30 fps in Anthem. Everything else seems to be working ok. I don't have GeForce experience installed at all.

Did you check nvidia control panel change resolution tab? External monitor sometimes changes the refresh rate it self, especially when you often change display mode or changing gpu in egpu Setting. Other things to check is gaming setting, check if it’s full screen or borderless, some system that has bad compatibility with nvidia drivers can’t output fullscreen, I had that issue on for honor at launch, fixed by changing driver to older one.

Solved the issue. Turns out Anthem has a double buffered VSYNC so I had to turn it off in game and FPS went back up to normal. Weird it only does this with the eGPU, never had it happen with the 2070 Max-Q.
