Just to check - What is the W10 version? I have 20H2 Pro with all the updates. However, I do not believe that it is the reason which impacts something.

So by chance, there happened to be a discount on the third in this game´s series, "Shadow of the Tomb Raider", for about 15 USD. Now, since neither "Tomb Raider" or "Rise of the Tomb Raider" wants to even start, let's just say my expectations weren't exactly sky high but still took the plunge and the damned thing actually started, who-hoo! I finally have a semi-native game to benchmark against Windows with!

The NVIDIA driver in both Windows and Linux has been 461, while the driver for AMD is a little hard to tell in Linux, it's whatever Tumbleweed shipped with 5.11.4, while in Windows I had the last known "good" version, 20.4.2.

So my old 1060 actually outperforms the new card... Upon seeing these numbers and gotten zero response from AMD about the issue report I made, I just gave up, plain and simple, and said to myself "Screw this, I'm going back to NVIDIA!" and spent ANOTHER 550-ish USD on a RTX 2070. I'm still going to sell the RX 5600 XT to at least get the 500 back that I gave for it, it's still a really good card, just NOT for eGPU, period. After installing the new card, I re-ran the benchmarking:

First of all, wow! 🙂 Linux really kicks Window's ass on this one, I'm really psyched about this! At least with the NVIDIA cards...

Second, compare the AMD and NVIDIA cards, even in Windows, it's a massive difference! To be fair, the 2070 is a more powerful card and every other benchmark I've seen confirms this but definitely not by this much! Looking at some benchmarking phoronix has done, the difference should only be about 5-6% but here we're talking more like 27% if all the scores are added together.

I mean, say whatever you want about the Linux scores, implementation details and all, but in Windows, you'd expect the scores to pretty much line up, but man, they most certainly do not!

How do I sum this up... I went from NVIDIA to AMD to see whether the grass was greener on the other side, but actually, it turned out to be red 🙂

Hey man!

Just have to ask if you're also affected by this? I know of your gaming videos and seem to have no performance issues, do you have the latest drivers installed or do you also have the old 20.4 (or older) version?

Just my 5 cents on a different driver's version.

@nemo That is more than 2/3 decrease and gets even worse with the latest driver.

I actually saw around 45% performance decrease but this is ... no idea what AMD is thinking or doing or what is the reason behind this... 😯

I might be wrong (I have tested a lot of versions / configurations, but do not remember precisely) but I think not all apps might get performance hit so bad. I think that I tried, Basemark GPU in DX12 / medium mode @ some point and it did not had a huge hit. If somebody has time and energy to retest it, that would be great.

Thank you so much for these numbers, it's great to have something to compare with and also shows the same drastic hit in performance with the newer versions of the driver! Also, you're using a Polaris card, I would've thought it only affected Navi but now that's proven as well, that's awesome (in a bad way) 🙂

I installed the latest Radeon Adrenalin driver version 21.3.2 on RX 6700 XT eGPU yesterday. Superposition results are not abnormally low anymore. Give it a try!

@itsage, you're doing "1080p Medium", could you redo the test with "1080p High" so that they're comparable-ish to mine?

@sebulon, Will do later this evening. As a point of reference, I always run Medium settings for all of my builds in different resolutions. In past driver versions (newer than 20.4.2), the score stuck around 3,000.
