CPU Thermal Throttling on Internal vs External Display

My current setup is a HP zbook x360 g5 with a gtx 1080 in a Sonnet Breakaway 550.

When playing games on my external monitor (1080p ultrawide), my CPU temps continue to rise until they begin to throttle.
On the other hand, when playing on the internal display (4k), the CPU temps are fine.

You can see on this screenshot from a MSI Afterburner log:
I first play on my external, causing that throttling pattern, and get stable temps once I switch to the internal display.

Anyone else have this? Any solutions?
