Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this site but would like to hear thoughts about my current plan for my gaming needs.

I currently have an Acer Predator Triton 700 gaming laptop with dGPU of 1060 6gb. The specs are as follows:

Screen 15.6 inch,  1920 x 1080 px resolution, IPS 60 Hz
Processor 7th generation Intel Kaby Lake i7-7700HQ 2.8Ghz with 3.8Ghz boost, quad-core
Video Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB GDDR5 vRAM), with Optimus Intel HD 630
Memory 16GB DDR4-2400 (2 x 8GB modules)
Storage 512GB SATA M.2 SSD(2x 256GB modules in RAID 0)

Now, I was planning to get the RTX 3070/80 to use for an eGPU. I also use a 1080p with 144hz refresh screen.

I am aware of the 20-30% performance drop in games, but I am okay with dealing with this drop as I imagine the gains from doing this set-up would off-set the performance drop anyway. Some of the titles I play are: Control, Nier Automata, Warzone (often) and Black Desert Online. Of course, I'd like to play CyberPunk when it becomes available as well.

Any thoughts from the community are much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

Of course, join the party. You’re a step ahead already, as you bring good research and forethought to your planning for an eGPU setup.

One thing to consider - laptop cooling schemes vary a lot, and some significantly impact gaming performance to a disappointing extent.

How is gaming on your your laptop going currently? Do you ever run into any cooling issues, or thermal throttling of the CPU?

Thanks for replying!

I do hear the fans spin when I play more graphic intensive games on it, but nothing that isn't expected. I'm not sure if that's a cooling issue or if it's just normal. if that's normal, then I don't or haven't experienced any issues with my system at the moment. Frames are usually stable at reasonable graphics settings.

Cool. Then the next step is really to try out the games you want with the card you decide on.

Performance will vary a lot from game to game, even scene to scene.

Also, for anyone reading who’s not focused solely on getting the highest FPS in battle royale games - the 3080 was designed to make 4K 60FPS gaming a real thing. And generally the performance hit over TB3 is proportionately less at 4K than at 1080p.
