Hello, I currently have 2018 Macbook Pro 15 with i7 8850 2,6ghz and Radeon Pro 560x. In bootcamp, my cpu throttles a lot during gaming. I fixed gpu throttling more or less with unofficial drivers, but cpu core frequency still drops down from base 2,6 to 0,9 after a few minutes of gameplay, even if I undervolt it with  Intel XTU or turn off turbo boost with ThrottleStop. So I was wondering, if I get egpu like Aorus Gaming Box RTX2070, will that help CPU not to throttle? I know that there will be some perfomance loss due to TB3 limitations, and I dont want to lose even more FPS due to my CPU throttling.

Does anyone here have 2018 MPB 2018 +eGPU like 1070 or 2070? How is your gaming perfomance? I am looking forward to 1440p 60fps gaming with newest AAA titles, if I'm unable to run it with eGPU and my mac, Ill cry a little, but then will build dedicated rig some day.

It probably thermal throttling, since MacBook quite runs on hot cpu temperature, did you check how high was it? It could also be power limitation when reaching some temperature value which very similar with my Blade 15, to keep better thermal on this thin cassis, though under 1ghz is too slow for 8850H, I didn’t check single core frequency but on multi lower frequency 8750 throttle to average 3,6ghz from max all cores 3,9 with that power limitation.
However that’s on playing with Blade 15 dgpu (1070maxq), on egpu setting (Razer Core v2), I hit mostly 3,9 on entire games, which comes to conclusion that egpu setting solved that power limitation on my case.

I have the exact same MBP model. The Radeon dGPU is a decent card, but there was always this issue with thermal problems. The whole notebook went hot and loud very soon. With an eGPU, you counteract those issues. Now, I can play a demanding game without the notebook going berserk within seconds. There is no guarantee that the thermal problems are completely solved, but there are alleviated for sure.

Yes it is thermal throttling,  GPU and CPU quickly reaches 90 and then throttles down to like 70-75.  I believe this throttling can not be completely solved in 2018 macbook body, so thats why I'm interested if adding eGPU helps. Thank you for sharing your experience. I've added glass plate under my macbook and no longer use it with my vertical laptop stand, so it cools better. Now I can maintain 2.6 base core frequency most of the time, sometimes throttling to 1,5-2,0

Thank you! Thats what I wanted to hear. Guess I will try eGPU then, and someday will build a dedicated rig 🙂
Did you try gaming on your mac in boot camp without eGPU? In my experience its impossible without glass table and disabling turbo boost, because it throttles down after a few minutes of gameplay to unplayable fps. And I wonder if my unit is defective or its normal behaviour for this model.
