Boys and girls, now it is official:

AMD Now Offers Radeon™ Pro External Graphics (eGPU) Support for Mobile Workstations

Adding to the longstanding and ongoing pioneering work and collaboration we have been doing with Intel on external graphics solutions over Thunderbolt® 3 with AMD XConnect™ technology which enabled the first hot plug and play support for external graphics, AMD is introducing external GPU (eGPU) support for Radeon Pro WX Series graphics, giving professionals the power and flexibility they need to create wherever and whenever inspiration strikes. Many creative professionals don’t want to be tied to their desktops or locked into proprietary tools, and with AMD’s open ecosystem of software and tools, the new eGPU solution frees people from these limitations.

Working together with Sonnet Technologies, users of compatible mobile workstation can now harness more graphics horsepower for workstation class applications and compute use cases, overcoming the limitations of many standard integrated GPU offerings.

  • Available today, the Radeon™ Pro WX 5100 and Radeon™ Pro WX 7100 cards are now compatible with Sonnet’s eGFX Breakaway Box.
  • The Radeon Pro WX 5100 and Radeon Pro WX 7100 cards are available from e-tailers today with a suggested e-tail price (SEP) of $499 USD and $799 USD.

Note that Sonnet Breakway Box is the only AMD-approved eGFX enclosure for WX7100 and WX5100  (Both 350W and 550W versions).

Great to hear but I found AMD cards troublesome in Windows.

Any idea why AMD cards cause and error 12 on my MacBook Pro 2017 13inch whereas Nvidia cards do not? I wanted to run a 570 for native macOS support with the ability to boot into Windows to game.

The announcement regarding Radeon Pro cards support is meant for PCs - native Windows 10 systems.

There is a difference between officially supported configurations and NOT supported configurations. Does XConnect works well on native Windows 10 systems - yes it does, just like what AMD says; so saying that "AMD cards are troublesome on Windows" is simply not correct.

Apple explicitly says that eGPUs are NOT supported on Bootcamp - . On unsupported Bootcamp - yes AMD cards do have issues - but those issues are platform related; please give Apple a chance to finish the work... I am pretty sure when Apple says 'eGPUs are supported on Bootcamp", all these errors 12 will go away...

I didn't claim “AMD cards are troublesome on Windows”  I simply stated  "I found AMD cards troublesome in Windows."

I also understand the difference between officially supported and not officially supported. You work for AMD right? Great first contact/interaction with a customer...

Will keep my fingers crossed that Apple is working on a solution for Bootcamp.
