Bad H2D / D2H perfomances

Hello everyone,

I'm testing a new e-gpu setup and can't achieve good H2D / D2H bandwidth performance in cuda-z. H2D around 1400 and D2H around 1500.

Configuration :

Dell precision 5530 (8950HK, P2000, 32GB 2666, nvme ssd)

Akitio Node pro

Nvidia P4000

I've checked :

-40gpps tb3 cable

-pcie 3.0 connection on 4 lanes

-nothing plug in the second tb3 port of the node pro

I'm thinking about :

-node pro firmware doesn't permit full tb3 speed (like the node). No firmware update available.

-precision 5530  OPI link speed limited. How to know ?

highly appreciate help...

thanks !

@strator, The Node Pro has good firmware to allow 22Gbps bandwidth. The low numbers you're seeing is most likely with the host ( Dell precision 5530 ). We've seen many older laptops comes with x2 PCIe lane Thunderbolt 3 connection. Run HWiNFO64 and expand the PCI Root Port that connects the eGPU and you can confirm.

Hi itsage,

Thanks for the answer. I've checked with HWiNFO64, the connection is on 4 pcie lanes. Additionally, on the dell website, the 5530 feature a thunderbolt 3, x4 pcie. It is a xps15 9570 with a "professional" label, which also feature four lanes on the thunderbolt.

Another idea ?

@strator, I had a similar issue with an Aorus Gaming Box 1080, but that was due to the eGPU's firmware. A firmware update of the Gaming Box resolved the issue.

I believe @karatekid430 had somewhat of a similar issue, detailed in this thread. He appears to have resolved a low H2D bandwidth issue by changing from a passive 40Gbps cable to an active 40Gbps cable.

@boltoway

Thanks for the tip. Maybe you're right and despite its certification the cable can't handle full speed.

I'll order a new cable and keep you informed.

For the egpu firmware update, Akitio dosen't provide any update for the node pro. I'm not confident with the idea of trying a firmware update of another product...

@strator, No problem! If you do, make sure you update this thread with your results.

I actually plan on getting a two metre active cable myself. This is what I have decided on.

@boltoway, thanks, you were right !

Problem solved. My precedent thunderbolt 3 cable wasn't able to handle the full speed despite its 40gbps label... I didn't find an active cable so I ordered a thunderbolt 4 (same speed but more strict certification) 0.8m passive cable.

Now, I have speeds up to 2300 H2D and 2700 D2H.

I think the cable you mention will work perfectly. It is a serious brand and it have the tb4 certification.

Again, thanks a lot !

@strator, No problem at all, glad I could help. All I ask in return is you complete a build and upload it to this community! Enjoy your increased performance.
