Black screen after testing hot-plugging? Try a DisplayLink adapter!
I have a 2017 MBP in Boot Camp and I am still trying to figure out a way to do hot-plugging (I've yet to try a fresh install fyi) but something I've noticed after attempting to hot-plug and getting a black screen, is that Windows is still working! Rather than going through System Restore (which I find unreliable at best) I would use a DisplayLink adapter to get access to a desktop in the MBP and from there do any recovery activities I need. If you have one, give it a try! Since DisplayLink relies on CPU for transmitting the desktop to the adapter, you can rest assured that you'll always get a display through it.
FYI: You'll have to install the DisplayLink drivers BEFORE attempting any of this.
