Daisy chain TB3 dock and razer core X ?
The current setup is a T480s with 2 TB3 2x port on the left, and a Razer Core X with a RX 570 driving 3 external monitors. I wanted to have a unique cable to plug in. Do you know if there is somewhere a dock that could do it ? I need :
- TB3 Dock with possibility of plugging in the Razer core X (so TB3 daisy chain -- will this even work ?)
- 3 USB A port with minimum 1 USB 3.1 (others can be USB 2)
- Ethernet 1gb
- Charging, although the razer core X does already charge the laptop correctly.
I have no concern about the performance hit since i do not game with this setup, i mainly do code and browse the web.
This is exactly what I have been playing with this week, and I still have the setup but stopped using it.
TL:DR it technically works but with issues.
Did not work well:
Laptop -> thunderbolt dock <- eGPU
eGPU -> laptop <- thunderbolt dock (basically using 2 TB cables, one for thunderbolt dock and one for eGPU)
Laptop -> eGPU + using all ports in eGPU
I have Razer Core X Chroma, but was not using its ports, and Belkin TB3 dock pro. I tried plugging the eGPU to the Belkin dock and from the Belkin dock to my MacBook Pro 16 and everything gets detected in both Mac and Windows but with issues. All I have is wireless mouse, wireless headset, and webcam plugged in to the USB port on the Belkin dock and that alone I guess overloaded the bus. Mouse starts stuttering from time to time and hangs for up to a minute sometimes and sometimes doesn't even come back unless I replug it, wireless headset audio stutters ALL the time even when the eGPU graphics card is not being heavily utilized. Webcam video cuts out in Teams calls.
I removed the dock from the equation and just plugged all the same peripherals to the Razer Core X Chroma ports and everything is working just fine without any issues.
I wonder if the Asus XG Station Pro is a better option for daisy-chaining with a dock. Have not done any research on that enclosure yet.
@unknownsolo, It's not due to the second USB-C port is not a Thunderbolt 3. Adding a USB hub onto a Thunderbolt 3 would replicate the issue with single-TB3-controller enclosure having expansion ports. I would say to look for enclosures with a second Thunderbolt 3 port such as AKiTiO Node Pro.
Makes sense! Node Pro sounds a like a better option all around.
Considering all the specs on paper, why are the Razer enclosures rated at the top in the buyer's guide? No matter the setup you consider, there is always some limitation with them and the Node Pro is always suggested as a better option in this fourm.
@unknownsolo, Users have different needs and our buyer's guide reflects the number of user builds submitted (past 6 month period). The Node Pro has its weak points in 60W Power Delivery and loud fan noise. The retractable top handle and second TB3 port are very nice features.
I'm using a Dell Precision 5540, have also used a MacBook Pro (2017) and a Dell XPS 15 with a Razer Core X through a Kensington Thunderbolt dock. Works great in macOS and Windows 10, works absolutely not great in Linux. Hoping the new kernel released this week helps with that.
