Hi,

I used to play with my eGPU with "light graphics" games like Fortnite or Apex Legends and it's working very well. However, I recently tried to play a more "heavy" game which is Monster Hunter World and it's more complicated...

I Have a 2018 MacBook Pro 15' and a Mantiz Venus V2 eGPU with a Sapphire RX Vega 56 Pulse in it. I set all graphics to max and running the game on a 1444p monitor at 144Hz. The game is running well at the beginning but after a few minutes, the eGPU crashes. I don't really know which part of the eGPU crashes (GPU, PSU, ship,..?) .

I used a 2nd screen to monitor my GPU and CPU to get some details and try to troubleshoot this issue. I can see that my GPU temperature is normal and doesn't go above 70 degrees.

Here is a short video of my screen with multiple monitoring softwares:

You can also here a little noise at the very end of the video with a black screen. I don't master this stuff so I can't tell you if I missed something... I moved a bit at the end so some sounds are not related to my system 😉  The only noise I hear is a little 'pop' inside the enclosure and then nothing.

And here is a sensors log file from GPU-Z recording at the same moment of the video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wNLGUQfXhp0cRrErCPm0nqsPEuEW707x/view?usp=sharing

Any idea? Thanks in advance for your help.

Maybe the power supply is insufficient. I checked the specs of your Mantiz and if you have the older 450W PSU you should consider to upgrade it. I had similiar issues with my eGPU case, I have a Akitio Node with a stock 400W PSU, and I had complete system shutdowns until I upgraded the PSU to a 600W model. Maybe you have a better PSU around and can do a test run with it.

How is your cpu temperature? If it’s on 90ish turn down the resolution to 1080p and undervolting the cpu as well. I had same issue with 7500U pairing 1080ti playing FFXV on 1440p on fighting scenes, to me that solved the problem.

Hey bro I was reading again my sensors logs and I can see that my cpu is at 100 degrees Celsius! Is that mean my cpu is as slow and can’t support 1440p?? Wtf....
however if it’s my cpu’s fault, why my egpu crashes and not windows on the Mac?

I have the second version of the Mantiz which has a 550w psu. I think that’s not the problem.

@paul_benett would be great if you could add your config. to your signature.

Mac CPUs running at 90-100C is the norm. Nothing out of the ordinary. Try re-fitting the GPU into the enclosure. I presume you have not applied any overclocks. You may also try undervolting. Finally, it may be the case that the GPU has an issue, and you might need to RMA the unit.

@paul_benett @mac_editor it could also be the Mantiz, I have one Mantiz Venus that is not working properly, it all started like you are describing it, it worked perfectly fine and then randomly disconnects and the only way to make it work was to unplug and put the power switch off, and start again, it used to last a lot before that happened and then it got worse,  lasting only 15 mins or 5 mins and finally just working for a couple of seconds to not working at all, right now if i plug it will be detected but then a couple of seconds later will stop working completely. I'm thinking that maybe the solder joints are not that strong or maybe they are bad quality but i had to buy another enclosure so i went with the Razer Core X.
