[Solved] eGPU error 12 fail after update to Windows 10 1903 or newer (OS Build 18362.329 or newer) inc downgrade pci.sys version solution
So I signed up for insider and downloaded the newest fast update (build 2004 I believe) yesterday, installed April drivers from bootcampdrivers And boom. No problem running my 5700xt on windows side, no error 12, nothing. Booted up this morning and it seems I got another update to 2005 and it’s broken again. Can’t force it to use the new drivers, every time I uninstall drivers using DDU and restart windows pushes the AMD drivers back in to mess and it doesn’t seem to want to work anymore. Tried uninstalling drivers without restarting as well via DDU and even that didn’t fix the error 12 issue.
Appears we may be SOL
Would love to discuss this further with many of you in chat. Anyone feel like taking a stab at that Discord server?
Swapping out the PCI.SYS to the 1903 version intiially works for me - but seems like only for one boot cycle. After that it seems that windows is reverting back to the 1909 version and breaking things.
NOTE: I didn't yet disable the auto-update, but since the update control panel said i had everything, I thought i'd be safe until the next update and could just swap back in the 1903 version.
Is there something else I need to disable to keep windows from undoing my change?
(apologies if this was already covered previous in the thread - tried to read through most of it)
@dan_hartman_1, I disable auto updates using group permissions.
@itsage, thanks for all the advice on here.
I understand I need to download the .30 iso BUT how do I then roll back or update to .295?
Can you share a step by step guide please?
- AMD official - but doesn’t recognise hardware
- AMD for Mac boot camp
- Bootcamp.com Red edition (if so Aug 19, or latest version)
I feel i’m so close, just need that final help to get this sorted!
@itsage, it’s ok managed to get the Dec red bootcamp.com drivers working on the latest insider fast ring version working. Saw the feedback that Jand and April were not always working
100% turned off downloads.
3 days and massively relieved. Will definitely be worth it though!
Thanks again 😊
On another topic, the new mbp 13 supposedly have direct tb3 motherboard support, resulting in about >15% performance uplift. Have you seen anything along these lines? If this is the case would that performance also be feasible on the windows side?
So while I enjoyed my eGPU bootcamp setup for more than a week, it was too good to be true.
Today while in boot camp I wanted to change the height of my monitor, so I moved it a bit and something (either the egpu or the 2 ssd disks that occupy my mini's T3 ports) moved, something got disconnected and I found my mini in windows, screen on, image visible (desktop etc) but completely frozen. forced a reboot to find my self in a black screen. That was it eGPU not working again. I boot fine without the egpu, but for some reason some resource deallocated and reallocated with the disconnection and it will not go back to a workable state now.
This is sad and funny at the same time, it's like a fragile person with unstable emotions, if you get it to cooperate somehow you need to be careful and gentle not to make it mad or sad.
@tsakal, 15% is too generous and hard to quantify. Apple has always prioritized the Thunderbolt 3 connections in their Macs so if you were to compared 2020 13" MacBook Pro to the 2019 benchmark numbers would be marginal. The real difference is a smoother experience during gameplay because Thunderbolt 3 connection no longer has to share bandwidth with other components through the PCH.
