eGPU (mostly) works in macOS but gives Error 10 in Windows under bootcamp

When I boot into bootcamp and turn the eGPU on (Asus XG Station Pro with a Red Devil 5700XT) it shows 5 different PCI-to-PCI controllers in device manager.  A couple claim they are working (although Asus' own software doesn't recognize the device is attached and no video cards show up), but the rest give an Error Code 10.  Of these, 2 claim they don't exist and one claims that there is no power to the device (although the lights come on and fans spin).  2 claim to be 'working' but don't do anything.

If I reboot with the eGPU already on, only the iGPU shows anything but it just shows some glitchy mess of green flashes and the windows logo, but it never boots and eventually it puts the monitor (a Dell U3417w) into a state where it can't even display the menu (as its flicking between resolutions so quickly).

Windows version is 1809.  If I try to update to 1903 it reboots and puts the monitor into some unsupported resolution (eGPU turned off).  It seems to be doing something but after a couple of hours it just sits there, in some unsupported resolution, and if I reboot it reverts back to 1809.

I have seen people discuss a lot of other error codes, but not 10.  Any advice?

Error 10 is similar to error 12 in that it's related to the PCIe resources given (or not given) to the card. This is based on my past experience with it on an older mac. Looks like you've tried plugging in at the desktop and booting with the eGPU plugged in, have you tried the timed hot-plug method of plugging in the eGPU at the spinning dots during windows bootup?

Well, now it sees there's a 5700XT there but it has error 12.  This moves me forward though - thanks!

How’s it working for you in macOS?  I get a lot of weird behaviour like Safari will cause system freezes and Civ VI will Cause the entire system to slow down a lot if I hide the application or have it running on a desktop space that isn’t displayed (when using Metal).

My macOS problems kinda seem like software but I’m curious to hear what your experience has been.

my MacOs is working well with this eGPU, attached 2 dell screen (1 x 2K, 1 x 4K), and another old 27' iMac as 3 external display set, all via Displayport.

The only down side exp is game, particularly like Epic platform ones, Borderland 3.
