First I hope the admins will not delete the topic like they did last time. My idea was to make a topic for mac mini only to avoid confusion.

I want to report that last night, I installed Catalina 10.15.3 beta and it still doesn’t work with the three major workarounds to get past windows 10 not black screen/error 12 with hot plugging. The three workarounds are:

- pci.sys file swap

- Downgrading to 1809 or 1903 .295

-Installing 1909 with all the latest updates

Last night only, I have clean re-installed windows (different versions) 4 times with no success with Catalina 10.15.3 beta. I am not sure, but based on so many trials and research, I think the problem is Catalina 10.15.2 and later. Because people with 10.15.1 and windows 10 1809 managed to fix the problem. Unfortunately I can’t try it as my mac mini came with version 10.15.2 installed already.

I will run some more trials today, and maybe I can manage to downgrade MacOS, which I know is a hard and unpleasant process with the potential of failure.

Unfortunately, downgrading macOS may not resolve your issues as firmware updates are not rolled back. I recall reading once about error 12 on Mac mini was to ensure that the HDMI port is left unused - if you haven't tried that (only use TB3/adapter for direct output). There are builds that use the HDMI port and still work though. Sorry for being of no assistance. Apologies if your topic was deleted - not sure why this happened.

Thanks for your reply. Regarding the deleted topic it’s not a big deal. I just saw other topic that started for mac mini then got mixed with MBP and MBA users, which was tough to extract info from.

As for the your suggested fix, could you explain a little more? How can I use TB3 for output only? My usual setup is TB3 to TB3 between the mini and the Core x, then HDMI/HDMI between display and Core x. But with this setup I get black screen (no Windows logo or anything). Alternatively, with hot plugging I use Tb3/Tb3 between mini and core x, then HDMI/HDMI between display and min (iGPU). Is there something that I could do differently?

What I meant was that when connecting a monitor directly to Mac mini, avoid using HDMI port (during setup). Again, I recall reading this helped somewhere but can't find that post atm.

In the black screen setup, the HDMI port on the mini is not used at all if that’s what you mean. The display is connected directly to the core x, and core x to mini via tb3. Once I get home I will try to take some photos.

You won't get output from display connected to eGPU until setup is not complete. So connect the display to Mac mini and eGPU separately and see if eGPU is working as expected after successful setup. I'm probably unnecessarily making life for you complicated and I'd just recommend one of @itsage's builds instead.

You aren’t making life complicated or anything. I think I misused the word setup. I don’t mean during Windows 10 installation. I meant afterwards, once Windows is up and running. By setup I mean the current stare in which each piece connected to the other.

I have already tried @Gibby ‘s method that is recommended by @itsage but no success. This is why I am more and more leaning towards questioning Catalina’s current versions. To be honest, I am thinking about returning all these devices because I didn’t expect all that hassle despite paying a large sum of money for it.

Anyway, if you have any other suggestions, let me know.

@os did you return your egpu? I wanted it also for gaming with my mac mini 2018 on windows via bootcamp.

Do you know if there is any setup that works with the mac mini? Are nvidia cards working? I wanted to benefit from the epgu on windows and mac thats why i bought an AMD. 🙁

I also think about returning the eGPU and put the card in my old Intel PC.

kind regards.

Turn off FileVault in macOS and all should work fine in 1809 and Catalina 10.15.3.

Choose which OS to boot to from within each OS, reboot, and all will work perfectly.
