Hot-plugging troubleshooting. (Error Code 31)
First thank you for taking the time to click on this thread. I'm having trouble hot plugging my eGPU into my laptop. When I plug in my eGPU I get functionality from my peripherals but my GPU will not start therefore my monitor stays black.
2019 Razer Mercury White 13" Stealth. Same one from the build thread here .
The eGPU will start up and run perfectly but when I disconnect the TB3 cable and try to plug it back in I cant get my GPU to kick on. The enclosure will light up and my mouse an keyboard and ethernet will all turn on and function but the GPU and monitor wont kick on. When I go to device manager I get this error from the gpu.
"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API."
If I restart the computer everything kicks on fine but as soon as I pull out I cant plug back in.
I have found that if i start up razer egpu switcher software and disconnect the GTX using that then I am able to plug the card back in. However if i close my laptop and it goes to sleep it seems to forget that I had shut down the card and i go right back to my Code 31 problems.
any insight into this would be helpful. I have tried a number of different versions of Nvidia drivers and that didnt help but I feel like its something with the laptop or windows thats keeping me from the eGPU experience i was hoping for.
@lange112, I do not experience the symptoms you described here with my 2019 Razer Blade Stealth at all. Have you tried DDU to remove all Nvidia graphics drivers and start fresh? I did not install Razer switcher software.
@itsage, I have uninstalled drivers with DDU and installed them manually from here. I believe I have tried v442.19 (current stable), v441.87, v436.48, and v425.31. I tried v425.31 bc of the problem was apparently solved from this forum here.
None of the versions of my driver have worked yet. But I might need to make sure that Razer Auto Switcher is uninstalled.
Just wanted to stop back by here. After a week of troubleshooting it seems that this problem is occurring due to the Razer Synapse program. If its installed i can not hot-unplug and hot-plug in without a Code 31 Error.
with the Razer Synapse uninstalled everything works as intended.
I guess ill just have to live with the default breathing RGB lights but its a small price to pay for hot-plugging capabilities.
@lange112, Is it still hot plugging correctly? I have been having this same issue and I have been fighting it forever lol. I finally swapped to an AMD card and not hot plugging working as long as I am running an older build of windows.

Disabled all the razer chroma services and now it hotplugs.

I started feeling that Razer Synapse is useless (i thought it's at least used for firmware updates or something like that, looks like no), thankly got one more reason to uninstall it. Thanks for the fix guys.
