Intel TB3 throttle bypass?
Recently built my eGPU . But kinda disappointed about the results perhaps attributed to the lack of homework done before hand. It turns out Intel throttles TB3 which from 40Gb/s to like 22Gb/s. I am wondering if there is a way to bypass this, or its due to hardware.
@saltynerd, Thunderbolt 3 bandwidth is capped at 22Gbps, no way around it unfortunately. Since you have the M.2 eGPU adapter, you can try connecting to the M.2 slot directly to get 32Gbps for the eGPU.
@itsage, is this the case for all TB3 or its just the the ones with a dual port controller like I have on my laptop? Is it ever possible to achieve 40Gb/s with TB3 like it was advertised, or that's just theory?
@saltynerd, The 40 Gbps can only be fully used if you have a display or two connected to the Thunderbolt 3 port. In that case DisplayPort signals are tunnelled through Thunderbolt up to 36.6 Gbps for the Apple Pro Display XDR without DSC (dual HBR3), and up to 34 Gbps for Dual DisplayPort 1.2 (HBR2). Any bandwidth that is not used for DisplayPort tunnelling over Thunderbolt, up to ≈22 Gbps, can be used for PCIe tunnelling over Thunderbolt.
