Hi everyone!

I am new to this eGPU party, andI recently got a Mantiz Venus MZ-02 and an RX580! I've been toying around with the idea of using it with Boot Camp. I've read the guides that have been posted out there and I think they're great, however they revolve around disabling the dGPU (Radeon Pro 560 in my case) and enabling the iGPU which is done for graphics switching in the Macbook's display. I have a pair of monitors that I intend on using when connecting my Macbook to the eGPU, and I intend to run any games as such through the eGPU itself and its monitors (never through the built-in display).

My question is, what should I do different from this guide ( https://egpu.io/bootcamp-setup-guide-tb3-macbook-pro/) to get it working as I intend to?

Thanks in advance!

You don’t need to disable the dGPU. Setup is hack-free on your Mac.

Sorry, forgot to add that I wanted to do this under Windows - I tried connecting the eGPU to my Macbook on Bootcamp and I got error 31, including upon restarting. Once I disconnected the eGPU, I saw a brief change in resolution, and the built-in display never worked again. Not sure if I did something wrong as it was my first attempt, and I did not have any monitor connected at the time.

You mentioned in the original post that you were attempting for Bootcamp - even so - setup is hack-free. See build guides.

@teltersat The 2017 15" MacBook Pro you have may work with eGPU plug-and-play if you don't intend to accelerate internal display. On some occasions, AMD eGPU would cause error 12. If that happens, you can attempt disabling PCIe x8 controller - 1905 to the left Thunderbolt 3 ports. Shut the laptop down and connect your RX 580 eGPU to one of the right TB3 port. Boot into Windows and see if it helps.

@theitsage I was trying this yesterday but never got an error 12. With the default bootcamp drivers, when I plug in the eGPU, my internal display goes black. Thankfully I had a displaylink dock that did allow me to control Windows to remove all drivers and work from a clean slate. (my dGPU went into error 43 and my eGPU went to error 53 IIRC) I did two things and got very weird results:

  • Without any drivers, connect the eGPU and install latest Radeon drivers: This allowed me to see the eGPU and use it as intended! however, the display would use the basic windows drivers make animations terribly slow.
  • Afterwards, I decided to install the official bootcamp drivers for the dgpu exclusively, and I lost access to the eGPU, I get error 43 now on the eGPU, but I get a display on the built in screen.

Perhaps it has to do with the actual drivers I'm using? I'm planning on switching to the ones at bootcampdrivers.com and check what happens!

I tried the bootcampdrivers.com drivers (ugh) and now it works! however I noticed now the fabled error 12 if I hot-plug the egpu. however if I boot the machine with the egpu connected, I only the egpu works. I'm assuming that hot-plugging is the way to go and that I should look into resolving this error 12. Thanks!
