Hello all,

First post! I think this is the top forum for latest egpu activities now. Great work, admins and moderators! =)

In ultrabookreview, Derek mentions that GS43VR is egpu (i.e. razer core) compatible, but that's pretty much all the information you can find online about this notebook/egpu.

Can anybody who owns it run CUDA-Z to see if it has 4 or  2 lanes of PCIe 3.0. I plan to buy one and want to make sure it's the right laptop for my future egpu projects.

Thanks!

GS43VR is a chunky gaming notebook. No reason for MSI to limit them to low power TB3 controllers connected at x2 3.0.

lspci output at http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=129916#p625478 shows us it's port1, port5 and port9 could be x4 3.0 configured, but doesn't show the exact detail.

It's looking more likely than not the MSI GS43VR is running a 4-lane TB3 controller.

I have 6th gen (SkyLake) MSI GS43VR 6RE and by default "External GPUs supported" is "No" in ThunderBolt info menu. This is the case with MSIs default shipped Thunderbolt 16.1.x.x drivers. The link" sicily428" posted does not specify which GS43VR were used, but basis on date I guess it's the 6th gen one? Anyway there has been confirmations that eGPUs will work regardless what's shown in "supported status" at Thunderbolt info menu.

MSI haven't updated Thunderbolt drivers for MSI GS43VR 6RE (still 16.1.x.x), but I found out 7RE drivers works as well, "External GPUs supported" will be "yes" after the following steps:

  • Enable "Thunderbolt firmware update" in BIOS
  • Download  MSI GS43VR 7RE TB driver from MSI support pages (TBT 16 SW2 PV_16.2.52.250_WHQL.zip)
  • Run setup.msi & reboot
  • Voila! You will now have 16.2.x.x with NVM firmware 21 on 6th gen GS63VR 🙂

Unfortunately I don't have eGPU (yet) since build-in dGPU does it's job quite well, but at least it now looks like it's officially enabled on driver level.

MSI updated all of the TB3 drivers across the laptops. Now the version is "Thunderbolt_thunderbolt_TBT'16_SW3_PRIME_16.3.61.275_WHQL_16.3.61.2_0x43b17577" and unfortunately it won't upgrade the FW version to 21 for me. I wonder if "TBT 16 SW2 PV_16.2.52.250_WHQL.zip" is what did the trick for you, or if you have tried something else.

In your bios settings, what is the value for "legacy usb" ?

Many thanks!

It was TBT 16 SW2 PV_16.2.52.250_WHQL.zip which did the trick. Did you have Thunderbold Firmware update enabled in BIOS settings? I had also EC firmware updated to latest (14A3EMS1.104) before update, but I'm not sure if that is required. Restart were also required right after running update, I was getting old firmware version before doing restart.

Anyway here are screenshots of Legacy USB settings in BIOS, hope it helps.

Is there any connection between thundebolt 3 and "legacy usb" option in BIOS? As far as I know - "usb legacy" option in bios responsible only for old peripherals, it has nothing to do with thunderbolt 3, not even usb-c.

I see now that you meant this for 6th gen GS63VR and not 6th gen GS43VR. I think that's what makes the difference. Thanks anyways! I think the Thunderbolt 3 controller chip is the same (1575) but somehow GS43VR won't update the FW to 21..

No. Instructions are for 6th gen GS43VR and are all about installing 7th gen GS43VR Thunderbolt drivers on it. Strange that it wont work for you.
