Please help , Windows detected egpu but cannot use the card
Hi I just recently bought an Aorus gaming box 2070 on ebay and used it for some time.
The thing worked just fine for the first 5 times and then it began to just die on me. First i figure it was my laptop ( RBS 13 ) but I have changed to a xps 13 9310 and then to the lenovo 9i and still in vain. The problem was all the same , device manager recognizes the card but no apps can use the card and gpu-z detects no clock rate and memory. Any recommendation ?
What does the crash look like? I had an Aorus Box that would overdraw power, and it essentially just shut down the eGPU and the computer would either revert to the internal display or it would freeze. In my case it was the PSU that was failing.
You could try running a very GPU power intensive workload that causes the crash consistently, and reduce the power limit in MSI Afterburner. If the crashing stops, it is because it is over-drawing the PSU.
Otherwise, you could use the RTX 2070 in a desktop and do the same benchmark that caused the crashes. If it doesn't fail, it is most likely the eGPU enclosure. If it does, you may have a faulty GPU.
Thank you for your detailed response . Technically my laptop freeze when I tried to run 3dmark and it happened quite consistently whenever I tried to do anything beside surfing around. I don't have a desktop so I couldn't test the gpu or something ,and I bought this at a ridiculous price so I m pretty afraid that it is the gpu's problem . I would try limit the power tho to see if it was the psu
3DMark is a very GPU power intensive workload. Try to reduce the power limit to 80% and test it again.
Have you done the generic Windows 10 eGPU fixes such as Nvidia Power Mangement and TdrDelay RegEdits?
It is difficult to diagnose a faulty GPU or PSU without being able to seperate them.
If you can get your hands on a 500+ watt PSU, you could jerry rig the Gaming Box to run off it so you can test it.
