Hi people, great site

I was wondering about laptops like the Latitude E5480 - most versions don't have a functional TB3, but only a DP over USB-C. However, I guess it could be that they have the hardware, but the software/firmware is blocking it. Any clue? anyway to "unlock"?

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

on dell latitude 5480, you need an i7-7820hq + 940mx for having tb3

@sicily428 said that necessary have a 7820hq and dedicated gpu to have thunderbolt on 5480 series, but is this not true.

In my country i have encountered a lot of 5480 without dedicated GPU or H series CPU some of them had i5 7300U or I5 6300U. I recently bought a 5480 with i5 7440hq to use m2 port to egpu, but with no dedicated gpu. Here enter the question, i have analyzed all models motherboard and not have noticed difference on hardware even the models that have thunderbolt, just the processor. Then my 5480 could been have thunderbolt 3 hardware but is blocked by software or bios?

Ps: 5480 is almost the same motherboard as 5490 - 5491 - 5580 - precision 3520.

Could be possible install a bios of a model with TB3 support to possibly activation of mine? Best regards

Unlikely given the following reasons but feel free to go looking for a Thunderbolt chip on your systemboard (or empty pads where one should go).

1. Dell have different part numbers for Thunderbolt and non-Thunderbolt systemboards.

2. 7th/8th/9th gen Intel CPUs did not have an integrated Thunderbolt controller. Dell have to buy and add one on Thunderbolt equipped systems.
