Problem solved as of 04/24/2019. See 1st post.

Sager NP9870S PE4C v4.1 Pending dGPU failure.

I had to create an account and come here and say thank you thank you thank you! to the original poster. I was having this same exact problem. Max fan speed just displaying the desktop. Disabling the built in graphics card in device manager, and then unplugging and plugging in the eGPU USB-C cable instantly fixed the problem.

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.
