Hi everyone, I was encouraged by @itsage to ask here for Octane X benchmark. Basically anybody who meets these requirement to run Octane X can make a benchmark:
- Catalina 10.15.6 AND Vega or Navi GPU
- Big Sur 11 AND pre-Vega, pre-Navi GPUs (Polaris, GCN etc.) including Vega and Navi
Okay, now if you're sure you met the requirements you need to do three things:
Important update: Right now it is not possible to make a benchmark on Big Sur and Catalina without Navi or Vega GPU. We're waiting for official release from Otoy and I'll come back to this post later.
1. Download Octane X from this link and install it: Octane X PR 2
2. Download Scene from this link: Test Scene
3a. Open the downloaded scene by double clicking on it.
3b. You'll see a node-graph editor with those nodes:
Now right-click on Direct Light Sampling and from menu choose Render
3c. Wait for the Render and check the time on the progress bar here:
3d. Write the render time somewhere. Do the same thing with Part Trace Target and Pseudo Monte Carlo Target.
So you should get three render times:
Direct Light Target (DLT):
Path Trace Target (PTT):
Pseudo Monte Carlo Target (PMCT):
And that's the whole benchmark. You may ask, there should be a standalone benchmark app for doing such things. And you're right. There is OctaneBench but currently it supports CUDA only and the Otoy's team is working on Metal version too. So right now this is the only one setup to check the scores. The Octane X is still in development but if you meet the requirements you should be able to test it. For more scenes to test you can download them from Otoy's site (Demo -> Additional Downloads).
Let me know your render times on your eGPU setups. If you need help - don't hesitate to ask.

.@ahr0n, Thank you for sharing these resources and instructions. I just tried on my 2019 13-in MacBook Pro + RX 5600 XT eGPU running Big Sur 11 beta. I kept seeing this error. Do you know why this is? I will be trying this test on the 2013 Mac Pro + WX 9100 later today.

@itsage, I reported it to Otoy and got a response. They reminded that it is still in Pre-Release phase and Octane works both on Catalina and Big Sur but if you're on Big Sur you need to first apply for their closed beta program. I'm not going to ask you and anybody to do that (it can take time) so the only one option right now is to wait for official release.
Similar thing is with Catalina if you have non-Vega or non-Navi GPUs. However if you have Navi or Vega GPU the program should work. I tried few times in Apple Store on their newest Macs and it worked. So I have to temporary suspend the benchmark test. I'll ask you again when it will be possible (probably within few weeks).
@itsage - huge thanks for your willingness and time for checking that, will come back to this later.

.@ahr0n, Thank you for the update. I tried with my 2013 Mac Pro + Radeon Pro WX 9100 eGPU tonight and it has the same error as you explained. I will run this test as soon as there's support from Otoy and post results via both Thunderbolt 2 and Thunderbolt 3 connection.

Hi
I get 26s 40s and 46s respectively, this is PR2 on Catalina 15.7 using an RX 5500 XT. (should theoretically be around 90 OB in OctaneBench)
I tried BigSur 11.2 beta with PR1 but it crashed. I'll give a try with PR2...
In Octane X official announcement, there were OctaneBench v4 results for NAVI VEGA hardware : but v4 wouldn't launch here, neither on BigSur nor Catalina.
Do you know where the results come from in the announcement ?
and also, to your knowledge, is PR2 the most stable release ( I read about PR4/5/6/7) ? (I'm a c4d user, and absolute rookie with octane)
cheers
O.

.Hello @oliveiro, thank you for taking time and doing the benchmark, Octane X is officially announced but we are still waiting for Standalone version which should be available within next or few weeks on Mac App Store for free. With this version we can come back to benchmarks and do them again to get proper and real results : - )
But, again huge thanks!
