Hi,

i would like to share my mods for mac mini 2018 and also for the razor x case with my vega 64 setup.
Priority was low noise, cooling external nvme ssd and got access to usb ports and not max out performance.

RISK - High Voltage / loose of warranty ... think twice.

First post, so I can't attach images 🙂

inspired by this thread
https://egpu.io/forums/gpu-monitor-peripherals/mac-mini-2018-thermal-solutions-thread/paged/2/

First try, i am a fan of the "blow hole" but i don´t like to cut my table, so i try first to use a old mac mini as active cooling device.
Works very well but I was still missing the easy access of the USB ports and still no card reader... shame on you Apple.

Please do not hesitate to ask ...

1.Mod - old Mac mini case
Materials

Mac mini case
step up converter - i use the onboard usb to power the fan 5v to 7v, attached directly to the fan
12cm fan - i use low noise Noctua, 120mm fan fits perfectly into the case
hot glue - universal weapon 🙂 (strong but still removable with less effort)
soldering iron - attach fan and usb cable to step up converter
multimeter to set voltage or try and error / risk up stepper can to more then 12v, can damage fan
draught excluder for better air flow
(remove black bottom from Mac mini 2018 for better airflow)

2.Mod - iMac stand with USB ports and card reader
Materials

iMac Stand with USB and Card Reader - i use a spacegrey satechi one
step up converter - i use the onboard usb to power the fan 5v to 7v, attached directly to the fan
12cm fan - i use low noise Noctua, 120mm fan (140mm should also fit)
hot glue - the universal weapon 🙂
soldering iron - attach fan and usb cable to step up converter
draught excluder for better air flow
saw, dremel or hamster for cutting a hole ( i use a 120mm hole saw)

optional:
thermal pad for external ssd to attach to aluminium body of the stand
good place also to store  other things ... (hot glue is you friend 😀 )

3.Razor X Fan mod
Materials

Noctua 80mm fan 2000rpm flx - working on high voltage device, do it on you own risk! - remove old one / soldering new one and use ultra low noise adapter - use 12v and ground
Noctua 120mm fan - just replace old one (no PWM needed, just flx fans)
soldering iron - attach fan power in the PSU

4. Mac mini - cooling with liquid metal paste
Materials
Thermal Grizley Liquid Metal Compound - best cooling solution, but not easy to use, be carefully
Alcohol to clean
screw driver kit to open Mac mini - ifixit guide is usefull

Benchmark:
Cinebench R20 2995cb

Thanks.

Thank you for sharing these very clever cooling mods! The CPU performance looks excellent. Funny how it slots right in between the top CPU configuration of Mac Pro 5,1 and 6,1.

Yes, but top (non Apple) CPU configuration of the 5,1 is 2x x5690 with 3,46GHz, will be much faster then the 6,1 configuration and cheaper as the mac mini if you buy them used and upgrade by yourself... but nobody wants 150 watt idle anymore 😀 ... have one under my desk but i think the mac mini with egpu is better package now...

I agree the Mac Pro tower is much more flexible and affordable to modify. I still use a 5,1 single CPU tray as my macOS server. It handles Time Machine backup, NAS, Unifi controller, Plex, and other experiment projects. The 4 SATA bays are great for high capacity storage. For a desktop-use headless Mac, the Mac mini and Mac Pro trashcan are more appealing.

Is that possible to power the fan from logical board or the internal dc header instead of USB?

Pending: Add my system information and expected eGPU configuration to my signature to give context to my posts

Yes, you can use 12V directly from the PSU, but you have to solder it or xyz and you have to pass trough the shield with the cable, the USB option is easy as possible and non destructive ... if you do not want to change thermal paste, the mac mini is still under warranty...
