90 Degree Angle USB-C Adapter

I saw a question recently about the use of angle adapter with Thunderbolt 3 cable/connection. The concern is of course whether these adapters reduce Thunderbolt 3 speed to that of USB-C. My hope was that they’re simply passthrough adapter and would have no effect on bandwidth. Here’s the USB-C angle adapter kit I bought on Amazon a few days ago.

I’m happy to report Thunderbolt 3 devices work just fine through the angle adapter. There’s no noticeable drop in bandwith. I checked in both macOS System Information > Thunderbolt tree as well as ran AIDA64 GPGPU test in Windows. Power delivery works without issue as well. Here are some photos of the adapter in use with my 2016 15″ MacBook Pro and Universal Audio Arrow audio interface.

Yes, it’s a lot more useful than I would have thought. I’m not sure what to do with the vertical angle adapter though. Maybe more useful for the enclosure-end than laptop-end.

I am actually going to use both for my Spectre setup. The laptop is on an arm above the desk, while the eGPU is on the desk below and behind it. The vertical adapter will be on the AORUS Box, and the 90deg adapter will be at the laptop. That will make the 0.5 cable much better oriented, without having to shell out 30-50$ on a longer active cable. I figure the vertical one may also be useful on the laptop in cases where the laptop is above/below the eGPU box itself.

@itsage - I have to report a disappointment. Neither of the two adapters work on the Spectre x360 with the AORUS AGB, regardless on which side of the cable they are used on.

Both work perfectly fine with the ZBook + Node Pro, but not with the Spectre x360 + AORUS.

That’s very strange. I connected the 90-degree angle adapter with the Spectre 13 just now and it worked full speed. I used the XG Station Pro which does not have much Power Delivery. Can you try with your AKiTiO Node Pro while the Spectre X360 is connected to its original charger?

Updated: Tested with the Toshiba Portege X20W-D which has only one Thunderbolt 3 port for data and charging. The adapter worked full speed.

Yup, mine been working great too, just bought it off ebay after sorting for the cheapest cost with shipping lol, i think i paid $2 total   😀

Tested by gaming in 1440p maxed out farcry 5, no slowdown in FPS. eGPU is the aorus 1080p, ignore the mess, doing some silencing mods

How far do these 90° adapters extend from the female connector that the adapter is connected to (i.e. the side of the laptop)? I have 15 mm to play with on the enclosure end. The picture of the adapter shows the width of the end as 12 mm. If the straight part is only 3 mm, then it should be ok. The vertical adapter at 25 mm minus the length of the male connector seems longer than 15 mm.

I got four left/right and two up/down. I can chain 5 of them together and still get 40 Gbps Thunderbolt (tested with RX580 in a Sonnet Echo Express III-D, using CL!ing in Catalina). Connecting 6 together gives no Thunderbolt. They didn't fit for my purpose though. I need something with a tighter angle (smaller size - less than the 2.3 cm shown in the measurements picture of the first post). I measured the adapters with digital calipers - it seems all their measurements were rounded down to the nearest millimeter (meaning all actual measurements are up to 1 mm greater).
