Apple TB3 adapter
I'm considering hooking up an eGPU to my MacBook Air 2017. Of course, it has a Thunderbolt 2 port instead of a Thunderbolt 3 connector. I've been told that this adapter is the solution:
The problem is that adapter seems to have the wrong connectors, as well as being TB3->TB2 instead of TB2->TB3. Additionally it has a female TB2 port instead of the male TB2 connector I'd need to plug into my Macbook. Even if it is "bi-directional" I'd need some kind of gender bender for the adapter, and I'm not sure such a thing exists.
Am I missing something here?
MacBook Air 2017 (i7-5650U, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, OS 10.14.4, Win10)
This is correct.
The Thunderbolt 3 end would connect to the eGPU and Thunderbolt 2 to the laptop. Use a Thunderbolt 2 M/M cable to connect the laptop to the adapter.
I've done this with a 2015 Macbook Pro and can confirm that it works.
Confirmed. This is correct. I've done it with a 2011 MBP with a TB1 port!
MBP 2018 15 inch + 2X Aorus gaming box 1080 in BootCamp and MacOS 10.13.6
MBP 2011 13 inch + AORUS Gamin Box 2070 on Ubuntu Linux 18.04.02LTS + 4K Monitor
Confirmed. My tip would be to use a 1m TB2 Cable. I use this TB2 cable from Startech and it's highest quality. It even feels good touching it ;p, It never lets you down, connects my TB3 13-inch Macbook Pro 2015 with a Sonnect Breakways Puck 570 in the most relialbe way you can imagine.
