I found these external PSUs on AliBaba, they are with 12V (like Dell DA-2 220W) i want to know if they will work with AKiTiO Thunder3, Thunder2 and Node Light like DELL DA-2

https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/12V-25A-EXTERNAL-POWER-SUPPLY-300W_1333572727.html (300W without Fan)

https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/220v-50-60hz-ac-input-12V_1628303275.html - (300W with fan)

(when the insider temperature up to 50 degrees, the fan will automatically start...)

The reason is because Dell DA-2 220W can't run stable - ZOTAC GTX 1080 mini 8GB!

Any 12v source with sufficient current delivery will work. There is nothing special about the Dell DA-2 except for two things:

1) The ~10-12$ price of it on ebay makes it really cheap to get and there's a million of them out there.

2) The pin-out is known and easy to adapt for our needs.

Give your Node Pro a second Thunderbolt3 controller for reliable peripherals by re-using a TB3 dock (~50$).

Another solution would be the power supplies that's popular within the RC and battery charging world. (Yes I'm into that as well)

Miners seems to run them as well.

The HP DPS-460, DPS-750 or the massive DPS-1200 power supplies for $15-30 each.

Temp controlled and deliver 12 volt and 40-100 A!

The relative compact size is as impressive as well with 40x85x200 mm

I agree with @username, i would prefer using any good pc psu or a Dell DA, modded to use only the 12v power delivery, with a custom case.

I would avoid any already build chinise psu like the one you posted, they are poorly reliable.

If you would build yourself a psu, rather look for the built in pcb itself, you can look at good already known devices with a 12v psu and find on aliexpress the fully mounted psu pcb spare part.

The Powercolor Devil Box uses such a 1U server PSU as seen here. Great for small spaces. Only problem is their small size means they use a small, and often noisy  high-rpm cooling fan.

What do u think about the seasonic tfx 350 watt or about the bequest tfx 300? It is also possible to reproduce the pin out of dell da 2 in order to upgrade the systems that use it.

Like I said above: Any 12v power supply will work as long as its cabling can be adapted to our needs, and excess cabling (if non-modular) can be snipped off. The TFX PSUs will also work just fine. Note that the TFX units operate a dual-rail system, so load will need to be balanced between the rails correctly, or the GPU won't get enough power.

Nowadays the majority of  high quality psu except for sfx are multiple rail because they are sli ready.... I agree that a single rail is better for egpus but these tfxs have got autobalance.

Bizon Box 2 used 300W external (no fan) PSU:

I found the same:  https://www.aliexpress.com/item/12v-300w-waterproof-led-power-supply-12v-led-driver-Aluminum-ac-110V-220v-to-12v-LED/32781369823.html

You can easy place it under your desk and the price is 30$ so maybe is the best for ZOTAC GTX 1080 mini 8GB! It's also waterproof 🙂

If someone can tell how they made the 8 Pin end will be great!

1. I found this cable:  https://www.dazmode.com/store/product/rgb-controller-dc-to-4-pin-molex-adapter-cable/

2. after that we can add:  https://www.amazon.com/EPS12V-Connector-Converter-Adapter-Battleborn/dp/B00852KPI2

3. We need 4 pin to 4 pin:  https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Molex-Female-Power-Cable/dp/B001VKQEGW

4. We need another 4 pin to 4 pin:  https://www.amazon.com/Pin-Molex-Male-Power-Cable/dp/B00478TT1C/

my idea is something like this, but Iam not sure that will work?

Nice find on the PSU that Bizon uses. That's a very good option!

Bizon Box 2 used 300W external (no fan) PSU:...

They abandoned it in favor of da-2 and they  introduced  also a new 400w psu.

The external power brick looks like a nice option. Does anyone know where we can buy those?

The build looks very clean and I like what was done to the back-panel to keep the boards in place.

@vava726 It is Mean Well 252W, that comes with 6 pin + we have 32W more, it will work for GTX1080 but not for GTX 1080TI for sure it won't be stable!

@enjoy It comes with 6 pins, the pin-out is a sort of subset of dell da-2, there aren't remote pin  and reserved/sense pin.

According to my opinion this is an InXtron dev PCB that comes with that back panel, I'm pretty sure about it because there is no trace of soldering near the pins of barrel.

I must recognise that is the best external portable PSU that I have seen so far... Weird that they didn't use for the BizonBox 3...

Have it arrive? Please, share your experiences with us. You are convincing me slowly to get an small TB3 box like Akitio Node lite... (but the Mantiz Venus should arrive first...). It is a pity that the TB3 box lite doesn't come with something like that straight away... Don't like to do any PSU mod myself. Cheers mate.

@ed_co I don't need right now, i just post it for the users with mini-eGPU to have alternatives of Dell DA-2 if they used 1080, for all other GPU that fits in Thunder2, Thunder3 and Node Lite - DA-2 is enough or Mean Well 252W if you want to overclock!

Hi all, I bought a Dell DA-2 to do a build for a GTX760. I am seeing several example on the power consumption list, but the dealbreaker seems to be the gtx 1080 which runs at 180 watts.
Will the DA-2 run a GTX760 (seems to be 170w) + the Akitio card? Or maybe run the Akitio with its original PSU + the Dell DA2 for the GPU only

Thanks!

They should totally let you see the sales figures! This would give you a better idea of what most of the people are buying so yo could produce your content accordingly. That’s just my 2 cents. Thanks for another great video!TutuApp AppValley Adam4adam
