Although an old thread, still super relevant, I thought I'd add my results in here for others.

With OWC purchasing Akitio, the Akitio 2m 40Gbps cable is no longer available. The equivalent is an OWC branded cable with the same specs (see here: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/CBLT3AC2.0BP/)
I wasn't sure whether it was going to work and when it's $60 for a cable I was a bit hesitant but I decided to give it a shot. Attached below are the screencaps from Cuda-Z. As you can see, no noticeable drop-off in performance between the 50cm cable shipped with the Akitio Node and the OWC 2m variant. Which I'm pleased to see.

For reference, I'm running an MSI GTX 1070 8GB in an Akitio Node to a Dell XPS 15 9560 running Ubuntu 18.04.03.

@dannawilson I think it's not the best test because your Dell is limited by a PCIe 3.0 x2 Thunderbolt controller.

I forget, is 40 Gbps Thunderbolt through PCIe 3.0 x2 better, same, or worse than 20 Gbps Thunderbolt through PCIe 3.0 x4? macOS will tell you if the connection is 40 Gbps or 20 Gbps. Does Ubuntu have a method to do that? I don't think Windows does. In any case, this example is not as good as 40 Gbps through PCIe 3.0 x4 (22 Gbps or 2750 MB/s).

Mac mini (2018), Mac Pro (Early 2008), MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), GA-Z170X-Gaming 7, Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 580 8GB GDDR5, Sonnet Echo Express III-D, Trebleet Thunderbolt 3 to NVMe M.2 case

@joevt

I've no idea re speed specs, just thought I'd post my experience with this cable given that the Akitio one which is discussed earlier in the thread is no longer available.

I'm getting up to 90FPS in Unigen Heaven on Ultra with a 1070, that's fast enough for me for the foreseeable future, even with the hamstrung PCIe configuration of the XPS 15.

With Christmas coming up and struggling to think of what to for, might well as get ask for something i'll need, such as a longer Thunderbolt 3 cable.

What's the current 2019 default option for a 2m cable with enough power delivery for a 13" MacBook Pro? Also, are there any good braided cable options?

Come across this 1 metre cable, full 40gbs and 100 watt power delivery. It's long enough for my desk and since I assume wouldn't loose as much bandwidth as a 2 metre cable? Also braided, think i'll pick it and will post test results when I can.

I use this 6.6' (2 meter) active cable from Xcellon and it has been working great for my build since April. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1400943-REG/xcellon_tb3_540_2_thunderbolt_3_cable_40gbps_100w_2m.html

CalDigit active cable works great at 40 Gb. My first one was defective (would disconnect if twisted at all) and they sent a replacement right away at no cost. This cable has been rock solid.

I got this cable too, It disconnects the EGPU from my PC after 5 minutes, and then I have to restart. (since hot plug doesn't work with my version of windows). Not usable.

I have the Razer Core X Chroma, Radeon RX590, Yoga 920.
