Mantiz Venus - USB-C long cable?

Hey,

I currently have a Mantiz Venus on my Macbook Pro (2017). The USB-C cable that came with it is ridiculously short so I want to replace it.

I  tried using the USB-C cable that the Macbook Pro uses to connect the power block to the laptop, and it doesn't work, so I presume it is not a USB-C cable? or there are different types of USB-C cables?

Anyway, does anyone know what cable I need to buy?

Many thanks

Nick

There are multiple kinds of USB-C cables:

- charging only

- charging + USB (this is what apple supplies I think)

- charging + USB + thunderbolt

In order to use the TB3 functionality you need the latter. These USB-C cables are expensive and SHORT. Passive cables can be 50cm long at most (I am quite sure the Mantiz comes with a 50cm cable). In order to go beyond that you need ACTIVE cables. These exist in 1m and 2m flavors and both come with a disadvantage: they limit the max bandwidth (only a bit) and also limit the maximum PD - as they are power users themselves.

Look for USB-C cables with the numeral "3" inscribed next to the Thunderbolt logo. See here a sample image with a compatible cable:

Great, thank you! really informative.

I will google about how much the bandwidth limiting will affect my gaming 🙂

I would expect a few percentages of disadvantage when using an active cable compared to using the default passive cable. I would also expect much lower Power Delivery. If you have an 87W PD capable eGPU then expect 40~60W available to the laptop using active cables. IMO this might be the showstopper if you have a 45w CPU and are trying to game on the Laptop's display.

I have the CalDigit cable, 2m with the number 3 on it like the picture above. I don't know if it's because I have changed the Akitio's PSU unit (450w Corsair) but the Thunderbolt cable gives  power to my macbookpro now... I don't know if the bandwidth is less than the one with the original akitio cable!

Hi! As suggested by Nando (thank you!) I send to you my benchmark that has done with AIDA64, my configurations:

- MacBookPro 13" i7 Late 2016 with Touch bar

- Akitio Node

- XFX RX 480 GTR Black Edition (Damn....)

 CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 Cable - 2,0 m

Akitio Thunderbolt 3 cable - 0,50 m

memory write:
2464MB/s=2350MiB/s

memory write:
2507MB/s=2391MiB/s

Iris Graphics 550

@Jefniro,  your 0.5m and 2m cables perform pretty much the same. Your peak 2391MiB/s memory write is slightly higher than the peak I have on file for a Nvidia card for 32Gbps-TB3 here.

It's all good 🙂

I only noticed a 1% drop in performance via benchmarking (valley) when using my 2M Cable Maters thunderbolt 3 cable. in real world use, there has been no real difference for me.

PD will still suffer for active cables (lucky for us most laptops don't need more than 60-ish watts). Thanks for real-world numbers on PCIe cables!

I ordered this cable 2 months ago, performance has been the same as the bundled short cable.

Has anyone tried this CalDigit TB3 cable for the Mantiz Venus? I'm reading that it doesn't work with charging and passing data (one or the other will drop).

My 2m thunderbolt 3 cable from Caldigit is burnt!! It doesn't work anymore, if I connect my Node troughs this cable the system says to me that I need to connect my device to a Thunderbolt port. Check the image!

They have changed it because the warranty, I have paid only the shipping costs because they wanted the damaged cable back.
