Yikes...EDID??  That's already over my head.  I follow what you say and appreciate you breaking it down for this plebian.

These are the things that I don't even think of and why I appreciate this community.  It seemed like such a simple solution to use the converter.  Again, @joevt3, I owe you a beer (or 10).  Looks like the WX 8200 will be a worthy consideration for me.  On a side note, can't wait to see what might come out of SIGGRAPH 2018 in this space.  Keeping my fingers crossed for a Blackmagic eGPU with a Vega (RX or WX), oh and with upgradability while we're add it.

There are rumours the next gen Nvidia cards will come with USB C, but they are only rumours so who knows... (we all will in a month)

DisplayPort to HDMI active is common and still fragile as heck. I wouldn't trust HDMI to DisplayPort further than I can throw it. Terrible, terrible idea.

Your emphatic reply is exactly what I needed to hear.

@joevt

I was interested in your posts on  IT-GO "ADP-099-31"..

Here is a project that I am considering and would appreciate your feedback..

Current Setup:

MBP2017 with 4 TB ports.

Blackmagic Pro Vega with a downstream LG 5k 1st gen

MBP with a second LG 5k 1st gen downstream.

Win10 PC with 2080ti and Titan ridge, so I can swap cables and use one of the LG's

Rather than buying a second Blackmagic, I want to have an upgradeable egpu.  Mainly because I can see the benefit of the Blackmagic on the MBP warped with heat, graphics card blacking out and I cannot see why Apple say that it is supported (safely) - results fan went down from 6000 rpm to about 3500/4000.  When not interacting directly with the second 5k the fans and temps are at a minimum.

So Here what I want to do: Accellerate the LG for the MBP and also create a switch to pass signal from PC to a 5k (may involve turning off the EGP on MBP when I want PC output or even unplugging lead on MBP - easier than switching at the back of any enclosure or Monitor). So:

Any full size EGPU Enclosure with RX5500 or RX5700  linked to ADP-099-31.  Take my Titan ridge out of PC, and also get another one, so I have 2 in there.  2DPs from 5700 to 1st TR. 2 DPs from 2080ti to 2nd TR, TBT lead from 1st TR to 2nd TR, TBT lead from 2nd TR to LG 5K..

I would appreciate your feedback..

I would then consider adding a WN95C to the mix powering it via DP and HDMI directly from each Graphics card (This model gives me input selections and PBP so I think gives me good flexibility in a 3 monitor Mac setup, switchable with a 2 Monitor PC setup).

Note that I this project might be a No-go because I can't seem to find stock anywhere..

What's the purpose of connecting TBT lead from 1st TR to 2nd TR? Both cards are running in host mode so they should not be connected together. If there was a way to make them run in peripheral mode (by using the firmware of a Blackmagic or Sonnet eGPU) then that would be interesting.

Since both the Mac and PC have Thunderbolt, I would prefer a method that connects GC-TITAN RIDGE to the Mac or PC using a Thunderbolt PCIe expansion box instead of the IT-GO to allow for PCIe tunnelling to devices connected to the GC-TITAN RIDGE. That would require some extra software, but that software doesn't exist so maybe the IT-GO is less expensive and good enough if you just want the DisplayPort to Thunderbolt conversion capability without PCIe tunnelling.

@joevt, it is just 1 MBP.

I am aware by previous conversations about PC -> TR -> LG 5k and MBP -> Any non BM EGPU -> LG 5k about tunnelling and not getting Camera and ports in the LG to work without non existant software (Thanks).  It is probably why I went the route of the BM Pro.

The purpose of connecting the TBT lead from 1st to second box was that I only want 1 TBT lead to go to the LG 5K and didnt want to switch the leads at the back of the Monitor every time I wanted to switch the monitor from PC to Mac and vice versa.  I was hoping that the TBTs would just pass the DP signals through (as that is essentially all I want to do rather than controlling any other downstream devices).

If there was a TBT switch out there at a reasonable price, then that mean a different solution possible, but I have not seen one.

Do you mean that only one computer would be on at a time? In that case, two DisplayPorts from GPU of the computer that is on could get connected and passed to the second Thunderbolt card but only if the second Thunderbolt card is in peripheral mode. A Thunderbolt host cannot pass DisplayPort signals through another Thunderbolt host to a display. I don't think anyone's shown peripheral firmware on a GC-TITAN RIDGE work with DisplayPort inputs and downstream Thunderbolt Display adapter yet.

Since you have access to the DisplayPort outputs of the GPUs, you could use a dual DisplayPort switch connected to a single GC-TITAN RIDGE. You'll want a switch that does dual DisplayPort 1.4 for future compatibility (but the LG only needs DisplayPort 1.2).

two computers: https://store.level1techs.com/products/kvm-switch-2-port-dual-monitor-8k-model
four computers: https://store.level1techs.com/products/14-display-port-kvm-dual-4ports

They're pretty expensive, so maybe a second GC-TITAN RIDGE would be better but only if peripheral firmware works.
