Can you help me  to take the stock of firmware situation ?

In particular, where to find them and what are the  certified devices that can perform the upgrade.

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

well if you mean the situation with the akitio node, all thunderbolt 3 certified pc's can do the trick. If you happen to have a macbook pro 2016 and have bootcamp installed, there is a method described how to do the firmware upgrade in windows 10 bootcamp on your macbook pro 2016. Look for it on the forum.

I've never seen any firmware updates for the Thunder2 or 3 from Akitio or Inxtron although I've have not emailed them either and asked about it.

Present: 2012 Mac mini + PowerColor RX 56 Vega Nano @10Gbps-TB1 + PowerColor Mini eGFX 180F via Apple TB3 to TB2 + macOS Catalina 10.15.4

Previous: 2012 Mac Mini + GTX1070 @ 10Gbps-TB1 (AKiTiO Thunder3 via Apple TB3 to TB2 adapter) + macOS

2012 Mac Mini [3rd,4C,Q] + GTX 970 @ 10Gbps-TB1>TB3 (AKiTiO Node) + macOS 10.12.4 [build link]

The Thunder2 and Thunder3 PCIe Boxes have no needed firmware updates. The AKiTiO Node does and can be found here:  https://www.akitio.com/firmware/node-firmware

The firmware updater works only on Thunderbolt3 Windows PC. If you're using a L'16 Thunderbolt3 Macbook Pro, this user was able to get it working on bootcamp:  https://egpu.io/forums/thunderbolt-enclosures/akitio-node-thunderbolt-3-egpu-enclosure/paged/6/#post-6718
