Akito Thunder2 Resetting Whole Macbook Under Load
I have also replaced for the test purposes the power brick for an old 300w GPU PSU 5,25" size. It has two 12V lines each should provide 150Watts (total 300W). This PSU is pilot switch operated via 5V input. I used usb-molex cable with I/O switch and 5V 500mA power adapter. So now I can easily switch the eGPU box on or off. I could also use more demanding GPU with additional power. But I don't have any with proper size to fit into the box. Maybe later I will buy RX 570 ITX. For old MacAir 2014 is RX560 also good option.
This is how I fed my old Thunder with a 1070.
The home made sleeved cable went thru and to the 1070 directly.
Looks like a very nice mod. I would be curious to know about how stable it is. I have some stability issues, but I think it is related to some software I'm using (the Filmconvert plugin seems to crash my system when I have both internal GPU (NVIDIA 750m) and eGPU (780 ti) enabled. When I run it on my Mac mini without any internal GPU besides the Intel one, it seems more stable but I can't use that machine often since it is a server.
About stability. So far so good as in the past. In macOS I ran some benchmarks and games. All ok. In bootcamp also the same (unfortunately). During heavy duty (playing games) system is stable. I believe with the new power source and bypass it will be ok. BUT! When I close the game and windows is idle, randomly it crashes. In afterburner I saw strange thing. Just few seconds before crash the core clock fall down to 0 MHz for a second. Then It returns to state level 0 which is 300MHz. After this fall the windows crashed. I thing it is windows / adrenaline software problem. I'm able to change state level from 1 up to 7 but not the level 0. I tried RX560 in Sapphire Gearbox with MacMini and it was super stable. I know the gpu is ok. I didn't have this problem with GTX1050Ti within Akitio box.
My problem is as follows
I installed web driver and egpu is displayed
But not used
I can not choose egpu in the application settings
Hi. Did you tried to connect external monitor in to the eGPU? As I remember well there is no option how to prefer compute via eGPU on internal screen in High Sierra. This ability comes with Mojave. I’m afraid that your only chance with Nvidia is external monitor. But I can by mistaken.
I have some news about MacBookAir 13" early 2014 TB1 and eGPU. I used this mac always with Akitio Thunder2. I mentioned that with AMD RX cards 460&560 have problem with stability in Bootcamp WIN10. In idle state windows crashed after few minutes (stable under load). I bought TB3 to TB2 adapter and tested with this macbook eGPU Sapphire Gearbox with AMD RX. I tested few hours WIN10 without any issue. VEGA56 Unigine Superposition reached 10000points. For TB1 excellent performance. Now I know that my problem is with Akitio Thunder2 box.
@branislav_benak, this is good to know. I had suspected that for some reason the Thunder2 was not the most stable, but I also thought it could be a software issue. maybe at the next opportunity I will acquire a different enclosure. Thanks for the info.
@noah_leon, I’m also considering replacement the AKiTiO eGPU Box. I’d like to understand the reason why GTX1050Ti works like a charm and RX not. However under MacOS the RX560 behaves better than GTX. Both should have the same TDP max 75W.
