Black Screen Startup Issues Mac Mini
@joevt, well, it does not work for me. If I use EGPU only, sometimes I get black screen (I don't think it reaches login screen since caps lock does not work), sometimes it boots normally. And waking up from suspend still fails sometimes.
Thus I am using same approach than @DaveSignal (thanks for that!)
Since I have only one monitor I decided to use a dummy HDMI plug instead of attaching the mac mini to a secondary port (otherwise I need to switch monitor inputs from HDMI to DisplayPort each time after boot).
Yeah, also tried latest 10.15.5 update and not working for me either. But the workaround I posted earlier still works. I have multiple HDMI in one of my monitors, and don't need to switch the display input for the mac to boot. It just boots as long as something is connected. The monitor stays on the eGPU inputs, which get video during the boot process and even displays the Apple boot logo on one of them after the BIOS beep. It is a shame that I was required to find a workaround, but I am going to stop messing with it now because I don't have any issue with the workaround and the mini boots, reboots, wakes from sleep every time.
Thanks everyone. This has been a really helpful thread.
As I sit here and ponder an upgrade from Mojave to Catalina I need to ask this question.
My egpu setup at the moment just uses an HDMI cable from the Mini to the monitor and a TB3 cable from the Mini to the Razer Core X. With a Radeon Vega 64 as the egpu. This way I have no start up issues at all.
My question is how much of an increase in gpu processing power do I really get if I persevere and feed the monitor from the Razer Core X? The way, I’ve read you should set an egpu up.
Well I finally bit the bullet and ungraded to Catalina 10.15.5.
I'm pleased to say it's all working perfectly.
Mac Mini 2018 - 3.2 GHz 6 core i7
64GB 2667 MHz DDR4
I am just running a single monitor off the first DisplayPort to the HDMI port on the monitor. (An LG 34UC99-W 34" UWQHD)
I'm able to shut down and start and restart all without issue.
Thanks for all the feed back. Let me know if there's any other info I can provide.
Well, you must be plain lucky then.
Catalina 10.5.5 here, and problem persists :/
Mac Mini 2020 - i3 - 8GB
Radeon 850, Razer Core X.
Did you upgrade to 10.5.5 or did you perform a clean install ?
Yep, clean install.
One thing I noticed was it was that it was dependant on which port on the Razer X I used. At first I had it in the HDMI to the HDMI on the monitor. This didn’t work. Then I switched to the DisPort out of the Razer X to the HDMI and that works like a charm. I don’t whether it’s because it’s the first port on the Razer X or what.
