The solution is indeed awesome, the price is ok. For me Apple Silicon support is mandatory since I have only a MacBook Pro 13" with M1 now but this depends on Apple and AMD.

Do not expect egpu support on Apple Silicon to be first-to-market by a small startup. Blackmagic will probably have a word on that, if it ever happens. My belief is Apple is too focused on their usual vertical integration margins to ever integrate with another CPU or GPU maker ever again, even AMD.

As for the topic at hand, I was also bamboozled by the May news on certification and even more with the preorder announcement and their disclosure of working with Colorful (or was it Powercolor?). This last one actually sounds promising because they'll be working with someone with that's clearly passed the market test over the years assembling actual PCBs and putting them in a product box. That's what lead me to actually spend the 5 minutes writing this request comment on their latest announcement about a block diagram for how the product work (or will work) internally, since in all things Thunderbolt, that behavior has a direct impact on performance of the features - something much more relevant in many cases than the availability of features themselves. I mean, what good is a downstream TB3 pass-through if all you can plug there will only transfer at 2Gbps, or how good is a 10Gbps hub in a dock if you're getting stutter due to a performant NVMe causing stutters in USB2.0 devices... Stuff like that which is essentially product-breaking

BlackBeast Pro preorder is live!

The product is incredible imho. It is not cheap but you can understand why. Keep in mind custom+taxes.

During preorder you can buy a Radeon GPU too with a reasonable price

@ikir, I haven't spotted how to buy the GPU too?

Maybe I am being sceptical but I feel this is to gauge interest rather than a real production run (once enough are pre sold then production will be confirmed).

Two way, there is a link to start to customise and then add to cart or you can click “buy” then click “choose accessories” in the upper part of the page.

@ikir, cheers, took a bit of hunting out but found them... good price and very tempting, currently would cost the same to buy an RX6800 in the UK as a BBP + 6800.

@eightarmedpet note that these are for delivery when the card enclosure arrives. A lot can change about GPU pricing and even models in the 5 months left for this to even ship.

Also note that the project spokesperson/leader replied to my request for a block diagram with a "we'll think about it internally". I mean, it's not rocket science that can be hijacked by other competitors. I'm sure whoever has or will manufacture egpu enclosures has already given a lot of thought to all the feasible possibilities of docking station functionality, and that block diagram would be nothing new or "intellectual property"-risky. It's why motherboard vendors ship with those diagrams in the manuals and one of the most useful things you can have for verifying product working as intended for consumers...

I personally think the price is right and even at 500 USD this sounds like a deal, on paper. Or better, on the paper we're allowed to see. What about that PSU efficiency rating? What about usage of the display ports when a GPU is installed? What about a tentative device compatibility list? I mean, whoever is reading that product sheet can extrapolate that from "two hosts" you could connect this to two different computers/systems and you would be able to share GPU functionality... Obviously that is a stretch but the fact we don't even know if there is a laptop that will take 2 thunderbolt ports and actually charge with the two of them for the rated 180W... Sounds to me they are just jumping over important topics that this novelty implementation of an enclosure brings to the table, and my first guess as to why can only be, like the first time, that this is another case of vaporware (or at least very bad marketing).

EDIT: and the main difference now is: this is being done through their own immediate payment system instead of kickstarter custodianship, meaning those 299 (+accessories) are immediately in their pocket for 5 months, and we are left in limbo about who and where the payment processor is and is based in until we see a transaction on a bank account/card. In my case (EU national), in the event this is another "unreleased product", that would severely complicate contesting through e.g. a chargeback or even litigation... That combined with the lack of data provided steers me away from preordering it. But then again, they're already sending emails that pre-orders are almost filled... And combined that further with the crazy 40% (!) discount they offer for preorders really stamps that snake oil vibe this is giving me again.

Hi everyone,

Nice to meet you, first post, and all that 😀

I've been following the BlackBeast Pro since its Kickstarter days (and cancelled my pledge thanks to the research from some names I recognize here!). After reading through the latest posts in this thread it seems there's still more than a few reservations about it. I'm not here to advocate it one way or another, just wanted to offer that I did order one since the re-launch so if you guys would like to know anything about it, I can be one of the guinea pigs and try to get you some information once I receive it.

Would definitely need some guidance as to what you're looking for though as I am new to eGPUs and don't have the technical expertise that you do. As to why I went and ordered this one and not a more established and trusted device? Budget and hopium :/ If that doesn't pan out then at least I can get value out of it by sharing some useful hands-on information about it here.

@incoghero, Welcome aboard and thank you for testing this new eGPU enclosure out. At $300 it's actually the best value with the specs it claims. I have a rough idea of component placement and mainboard layout but want to wait until the production units get to people's hands before further discussion. Hope they're able to deliver the first round in the fall.

@incoghero, welcome! I'm sure the community would be happy to have you share your hands-on experience (and ask questions). I believe @ikir also ordered a unit and presume @itsage would grab one for a review as well. I for one am curious to see how this eGFX pans out in the long run, given how they started off.

If you connect two hosts, 1 would be for eGPU, and 1 for the dock/peripherals no? I don't think sharing a PCIe device across two hosts is even possible unless some mux is used to interface between the GPU slot and thunderbolt (and I don't believe there's anything fancy involved here). That's why we have GPU passthrough in virtualization to begin with. Perhaps @nando4 or @joevt would have a better idea, as my hardware knowledge is limited to say the least.

Still not ordered because of customs and uncertainly about Apple Silicon support. I would love to order one, still thinking about it.
