eGPU as Thunderbolt 3 dock only

Can the GPU in an enclosure be disabled to switch it off completely an not draw any power?

I am considering an eGPU as a Thunderbolt 3 dock (primarily for power) which would be used probably 24/7 but gaming would be much less frequent. Even with the GPU being idle is still not ideal for as it would turn it into glorified power adapter.

If anyone has any experience or information with this it would be very helpful.

@blazerunner, As long as the GPU is installed in the PCIe slot, it consumes a certain amount of power. I don't think there's a software solution to disable the eGPU functionality that completely eliminates power draw.

Thanks @itsage, this is what I wanted to confirm. I may just disconnect the GPU when not it's not in use then.
