I’m just gonna say that this thread is sick! The suggestions seem to be awesome - got to know about SF600 PSU from here - fits and works perfectly.

Thanks for the reply @drax392

It's such a cheap component and then shipping costs really bump it up!

Did someone here say they were going to post a walkthrough tutorial? I think that would be really useful.

PSU swap complete!  It didn't go quite as smoothly as I had hoped, the PCIe cables I bought had different pinouts than the Corsair PSU.  So, I ended up removing the pins from the 6-pin connector from the original PSU to free up that connector, removing the pins from the "CPU" connector on the CPU power cable that came with the Corsair PSU, and attaching the original connector to the Corsair cable, making sure the pins matched the PCIe cable supplied with the PSU.

Other than that, everything else was a piece of cake and the Node is silent under normal use, under load the fans are still pretty quiet.  Much, much quieter than with the original PSU (I went with the SF600 just to give some extra headroom as some had issues with the 1080Ti and the 400W/450W PSUs).

If AKiTiO used zero-fan-mode PSUs and silent case fans then they would be perfect out of the box, IMO. It's a bummer that we have to do this mods to quiet them down, but it's still worth it.  🙂

Hi @drax392

Amazing stuff! Thank you

I am going for the SF600 PSU as I am also getting the 1080ti.

Could you please advise me as to what else I should order from amazon in order to make the replacement process as smooth as possible (not experienced, any tips would be greatly appreciated)?

So far I have listed:

1) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008N2ZVOW   (front fan)

2)3 to 2 Pin adapter cable for front fan (any suggestions?)

3) SF600

4)PCIe Cables (any suggestions so that I can potentially avoid the pin issue you faced?)

Looking forward to hearing from you 🙂

For the front fan? I don't think this will fit on the Akitio board I am afraid. When you open the Node and look at the plug, you will see it's different, no?

@anima   Thanks for catching that.  Correct one from that vendor is below link for 3 to 2 pin converter.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002FR84FY

Thinking about making these mods myself - I'm struggling to get the 3 to 2 pin adapter - D style in the UK. Is there another name for it? Does anyone know where I could get one from?

You should be able to order the "D" style adapter directly from Cooler Guys, they do ship to the UK according to their site.

https://www.coolerguys.com/products/3-to-2-pin-adapter-4-different-styles

I just replaced both the PSU fan as well as the fan on the front. The two connectors are DIFFERENT, so it was a bit of a hit an miss with the adapters. For the front fan I got this one:  https://www.caseking.de/luefter-adapterkabel-2-pin-zu-3-pin-molex-zuad-176.html

This one did not fithttps://www.amazon.de/dp/B003D6O53Q

For the PSU I did not find the correct adapter at all. I just cut the cables of the old fan and joined them together with the new fan in these little metal pipes with some isolating tape around. It's really silent now.

Indeed, which adapter you need depends on which parts you're using.  I would hope people would buy the adapter needed for the parts they're buying and not assuming everything uses the same connector.  So, if someone says they're having a hard time finding a "D" connector in the UK then I'll point them to where they can order a "D" connector in the UK.  😉

Glad you got your install sorted out, so much more pleasant having everything quiet.

I had a hard time finding a "D" connector in Germany/Uk as well. It's somehow not frquently named that way here I feel. The page I linked to also ships to UK. But shipping is expensive..

Did anyone find an adapter for the PSU fan? I ended up just DIY connecting the cables. But for anyone who does not want to swap the entire PSU in the future it would be nice to know.

Would this one work?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Pin-Converter-for-Mobile-Racks-CB-YA-D2P-/330224647443?epid=1939095252&hash=item4ce2ec3d13:g:5CoAAOSwd4tT46oi

This one is bang on! (Only for front fan)

it also reassuringly says D2P in the article code. The other one was C2P
