Pre-order Update: Gigabyte has announced a pre-order for this RX 580 Gaming Box exclusively through our forum. This is easier than a group-buy in that as soon as you arrange payment with Gigabyte, they will ship the unit to you right away. Available from April 16th, 2018 to April 22nd, 2018. US and Canada only.

I heard the AORUS team is prepping a macOS-compatible Gaming Box to launch alongside 10.13.4 this spring. Given how insane pricing for graphics cards is in general, I have a few thoughts. Mainly we want to make sure eGPU enthusiasts get their chance to buy these Gaming Boxes at non-inflated prices. Group buy is an option. The other option is a discount code distributed through our forum and eGPU sub-Reddit. No word on MSRP yet. If you're interested in this Gaming Box, please post a response so that we have an idea whether to organize a group buy/coupon code.

Update: I received more information on this new Gaming Box. It's branded as Gigabyte instead of AORUS. The GPU is a mini-ITX RX 580 with a custom cooler similar to the GTX 1080 version. My guess is it has an 8-pin power connector. Here are some photos:

Any idea which card they plan to base this on? An RX580 is a rather obvious choice, and it will be interesting to investigate the difference between this box and the older ones (that don't seem to like RX570/RX580 cards).

macOS native external GPU support leaves us with only a handful of choices. It's unlikely a Vega because that would mean $1,000 price in this current market. My bet is an RX 580 eGFX.

I am not sure having a Vega would mean a 1k USD price tag. GTX1070s are selling for 630+ USD, but the Gaming Box 1070 is still 599.99$. A Vega 56 is 750+ USD, so an Aorus Vega could show up at 699$. But since I don't think they'll change the box itself, and Vega Nano is MIA, I doubt it will be Vega based.

Not really worth it to drop the 1070 Gaming Box I have for a RX580. Maybe if it was a better card I would consider it.

On a side note, bugs me the Gigabyte/Aorus are releasing another box without patching the USB issues still around in the 1070 and 1080 Gaming Box's.

Yeah, the USB issues are annoying as hell. I wonder if it is an issue at Intel's level.

Absolutely interested in this! Planning on buying an Aoros Gaming Box 1070 to run with my 2016 13" MBP in a couple of weeks time, but I'm apprehensive due to the lack of Nvidia support in MacOS.

This would be perfect! Especially as it's so hard to get these Radeon cards in stores atm.

Discount code would be ideal, but if you go ahead with a group buy, would shipping to Australia be an option?

Any idea if they'll get around to fixing error 12 for boot camp on the 2017 13 inchers?

If so, this thing would be perfect

Looks like Aorus/Gigabyte  has been taking note of the custom builds slotting AMD R9 285 or RX56 into their  emptied Nvidia GTX1070/80 chassis but are now sourcing/designing a more powerful RX580 to fit instead:

This is great news.  Gigabyte is bringing smallfactor that will appeal to  Mac owners.  Let's consider other competing AMD eGPU offerings and their prices:

So if Gigabyte target US$499-US$699 then we may start seeing a lot more RX580 Gaming Box builds.  Here we'd get a tiny chassis inclusive of the PSU that's not much larger than the Puck, 100W PD and a proper RX580 GPU. Good stuff.

@nombrescreeno this is what I need too... its up too Apple though (the latest firmware on 15inch 2017 makes bootcamp plug and play with AMD cards but I tried again with my 580 and 13 and no luck).

Apple also need to work out a way to power the LG Ultrafine's from an eGPU in macOS (which works very well in Windows), or does someone know of a way I have missed? I wonder if it would be powered in clamshell mode?

F.ckin' yes!!!!! Finally! I was writing always to Gigabyte to make it real. I'm a huge small form factor fan and this was my favorite box. However, it doesn't work on Mac, now it will.

I hope they release a cheaper 570 4GB version as well. I’m running a 2560x1440 monitor, so I’m sure the 8GB 580  would be well used, but having an 8GB VRAM GPU connected to a laptop with only 8GB of RAM itself (along with a mere 2.0ghz Dual Core) seems excessive.

My,  my, is that three DisplayPorts I am seeing there? Perhaps closer in price to the 1070 than the 1080? Perhaps even below the 1070 price a hair?

I like my Lenovo dock a lot but I already hit the two DisplayPort limit once while doing this and that and I expect that to just get a lot worse. Three DisplayPorts with more ooomph than the 1050 might be in order. The Puck, of course, has three DPs but I haven't yet managed to convince myself to pay 600 USD for an RX 570 when  the Aorus 1080 is 700 USD at Newegg... An RX 580 below 600 USD, that would be something to think about.

I always end up wanting just too much video bandwidth, couple years back I was running an IBM "Big Bertha" T221 from the two DisplayPort 1.1 of the ThinkPad T420 with a string of strange (and not cheap) converters... I  never learn! (Looking at the five 22" monitors in the cupboard, I definitely never learn -- and those are just the currently/temporarily out of commission ones, I have a 24" BenQ, two PackedPixels and an 55" HDTV in active use and still just a poor, poor ThinkPad driving all of 'em although this one has a HDMI output and a Thunderbolt 3.)

Definitely in for whatever buy they do. Would pay for a Vega, but seeing as no one has an ITX Vega card yet, that would be a huge surprise.

Why not get a Sonnet Puck with a 570 then?

Definitely interested if they put a proper GPU into it.
I need at least 8GB (better 16) for work... the mini-ITX RX 580 only has 4GB right? ..... we already got the puck for that..

There is no non-OEM ITX 580

580 is also a major step up on the 570 and IIRC there are no 16 GB GPUs out now, NVIDIA or AMD, for gamer cards

I know... but since I use it for work.. I would also be willing to pay for a WX 9100 in an enclosure as compact as possible. Though I get this is supposed to be a "Gaming Box".

I'm concerned about the USB issues reported with the GTX 1070 and 1080 Gaming Box (referenced here by @Kim_KJD)

@theitsage is it possible to verify with Aorus/Gigabyte whether they will solve this issue?

I would be IN if they solve this and the price of the unit is ~$500 (it is my understanding that the RX580 is similar to GTX 1060).

Thank you

@rodrisanz We found all eGPU enclosures with expansion I/O experience this USB issue. Intel's solution was to add a second TB3 controller as seen in the Razer Core V2. A partial solution was a Thunderbolt firmware that places restriction on H2D speed.
